Winchester School in Winchester, NH is a caring and compassionate K-8 school designing and delivering innovative instructional experiences for all of its 320 students. The Winchester School family support specialist is a compassionate human services professional who believes that no matter where students begin their learning journey, all can accomplish significant growth and development through a structured, engaging, and rigorous course of study. The family support specialist is appreciative and empathetic toward the life needs of all learners from our community, all while adhering to the core mission of building the needed academic, civic, and social skills that will help them excel in their path towards high school and beyond.

Collaborator, family connector, and coach describe only some of the key characteristics of a Winchester middle school teacher. The Family Support Specialist will provide opportunities for families to be actively involved in the planning, implementation, and review of school's Title I programs and activities, and to serve as a liaison to community agencies, services, and interested community members to benefit our students through rich connections and programming. Responsibilities of the Coordinator include: 1. With Title I Coordinator and Title I school principal, plan year-long activities that involve families in their child(ren)'s academic experience.

2. Support school and district parental involvement, such as movie night coordinated with a book, pajama night, Bingo for Books, read-a-thon, family reading-at-home lending books, book or author-themed events. 3. Engage community members through unique programming, events, and opportunities for students, families and community members to gather and learn.

4. Distribute agreed-upon policies to parents, students, or community members. 5. Support the schools in their family engagement and community partnership activities in accordance with school improvement plans.

6. Provide an explanation to parents and families about the purpose and goals of Title I and the value to their family. 7. Support schools in surveying families, students and communities to identify issues and concerns.

8. Assist with coordinating access to school leadership. 9. Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and promote access to educational involvement for all families while facilitating connections among families and students and community.

10. Help families support learning at home and at school while linking student work to learning standards that lead to success for all students. 11. Actively partner with community organizations, businesses, and citizens to achieve student learning goals, including community service learning or integrated thematic activities.

12. Help families understand how the school and district operates, as well as the rights and responsibilities of parents under federal and state laws. 13. Help families be effective advocates for their children and help them engage in civic advocacy for student achievement.

14. Partner as appropriate with area agencies or connect families with the appropriate services 15. Develop effective parent engagement groups and parent/family leadership that represent all families. 16.

Ensure community members have a voice in all decisions that affect children by connecting families and schools to local officials. 17. Actively recruit community leaders, experts, authors, etc. to share their knowledge in age appropriate programming at all levels, preK-12 (Authors' Night, Lecture Series, Guest Speakers, etc.).

18. Oversee development of a monthly calendar of events related to academics, particularly reading, that encourages family participation; these may include, but limited to, movie night coordinated with a book, pajama night, Bingo for Books, read-a-thon, family reading-at home lending books, book or author-themed events. 19. Work with the PTA to coordinate resources for providing activities and maintain a sign in roster of parents who participate in events.

20. Have a visual presence at open houses and other school events to introduce and explain Title I. Requirements for the position: A Bachelor's degree in social work, human services, counseling, psychology, or a related field; and advanced degree is preferred. Experience working with families, children, or in related fields such as case management, community outreach, or human services.

Organizational or small setting clinical experience is a plus. 112 days (0.6FTE)
