Deputy Sheriff

Job Description:

Deputy Sheriffs enforce federal, state, and local laws by serving legal documents, patrolling assigned areas, responding to calls for service, conducting traffic enforcement, apprehending suspects, and making arrests. Deputies conduct criminal investigations, prepare reports, collect and preserve evidence, testify in court, transport inmates, assist with community education programs, and coordinate emergency mental health commitments. Employees may perform other related duties as assigned. Specific duties may vary based on assignment.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Possess a High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate.
• Hold a Basic Peace Officer License issued by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
• Possess a valid Texas driver's license or be able to obtain one prior to employment.
• Have no felony convictions or convictions that would disqualify the applicant under Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) standards.
• Not be currently under indictment for any criminal offense.
• Have never been placed on court-ordered community supervision or probation for a criminal offense that would disqualify the applicant under Texas law.
• Be able to successfully complete a comprehensive background investigation.

Military applicants must disclose any non-judicial punishment received under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).

Applicants must also be knowledgeable of applicable federal, state, and local laws.

Requirements:

Applicants must be available to work any assigned shift, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.

Essential Job Functions:

Deputies are expected to:

• Patrol assigned districts to deter crime, enforce traffic laws, and protect life and property.
• Respond to calls for service and emergency situations.
• Investigate criminal offenses, traffic crashes, and other incidents.
• Conduct interviews, collect evidence, and prepare detailed reports.
• Prepare criminal cases for prosecution and testify in court.
• Serve criminal arrest warrants and search warrants.
• Arrest, process, search, and transport prisoners.
• Conduct traffic enforcement and issue citations or warnings when appropriate.
• Perform criminal justice database inquiries.
• Assist stranded motorists and remove roadway hazards when necessary.
• Respond to disasters, critical incidents, major investigations, and rescue operations.
• Provide emergency first aid until relieved by medical personnel.
• Utilize lawful and appropriate force when necessary.
• Detect and prevent criminal activity, including narcotics violations and organized criminal activity.
• Participate in community policing and crime prevention programs.
• Answer questions from the public regarding laws, procedures, and department policies.
• Maintain issued vehicles, firearms, and equipment in proper working condition.
• Maintain proficiency with department-issued firearms, defensive tactics, and other required training.
• Interact professionally with individuals experiencing mental health crises.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

Deputies regularly work in both office and field environments and may be exposed to:

• Extreme weather conditions
• Dirt, dust, smoke, fumes, and unpleasant odors
• Hazardous environments
• Violent or combative individuals
• Graphic crime scenes
• Serious injuries and fatalities
• Individuals suffering from mental illness or emotional distress

Employees must be willing to work irregular hours, extended shifts, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime as operational needs require.

Physical Requirements

The position requires the ability to:

• Walk, run, climb, crawl, kneel, bend, stoop, and stand for extended periods.
• Lift, carry, drag, or move individuals and equipment.
• Physically restrain resistant individuals when necessary.
• Operate emergency vehicles and law enforcement equipment.
• Maintain sufficient vision, hearing, speech, and manual dexterity to safely perform law enforcement duties.
• Successfully complete department physical fitness requirements and participate in ongoing physical training.
