What are the responsibilities and job description for the Permit Technician position at Wilson County Government?
Performs technical and administrative support related to permitting and development review functions. Work entails providing assistance to the public through email, permitting portal, telephone, and in-person office queries. Work is very process oriented and requires a high attention to detail and timing. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Inspections Supervisor.
Serves as receptionist, answers telephone and routes calls; takes requests for and schedules inspections; answers questions and takes complaints from homeowners and contractors.
Performs customer service functions; provides information and assistance regarding department services, procedures, fees, permits/applications.
Receives and processes building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and zoning and other permit applications; reviews applications for accuracy; notifies appropriate parties regarding discrepancies; prepares folders for projects, filing plans; makes copies of applications and supporting documentation.
Receives, receipts and accounts for various revenues; prepares and makes daily deposits; reconciles daily batches; submits financial reports to the Finance department.
Produce routine correspondence following established department operations, policies, procedures, regulations and ordinances as directed by the supervisor.
Prepares inspection permits; enters inspections into the computer; runs daily inspection schedule reports.
Prepares and submits certificates of occupancy upon request.
Strong knowledge of computer usage and various software’s.
Performs general office tasks, including sending and receiving emails, sorting and distributing incoming mail and processing outgoing mail.
Assist with Fire Inspection scheduling, reporting, and public awareness.
Monitors department inventory of supplies and forms; initiates requests and orders for new and/or replacement supplies.
Performs administrative support duties and other tasks as assigned.
High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in general administrative support work involving contact with the public including some experience in a permitting office environment, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to obtain a Notary Public license within six months of employment.

REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated office machines including computers and peripheral equipment, transcribers, copiers, facsimile machines, calculators, etc. Requires the ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for sedentary work. Light Work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. However, if the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional structural, or composite characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence, minutes, agendas, public notices, news advertisements, records, indices, reports, forms, technical, manuals, general statutes, purchase orders, invoices, etc. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence, memoranda, reports, forms, meeting minutes, agenda, resolutions, franchises, ordinances, purchase orders, etc., using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style. Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control and confidence.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of the basic governmental and administrative framework in which the planning department functions operate.
Considerable knowledge of arithmetic, spelling, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary.
Considerable knowledge of state open meetings and public records laws.
General knowledge of building and land development code regulations.
General knowledge of the use of various telecommunications systems utilized by County offices.
Some knowledge of the geographic and socio-economic layout of the County.
Skilled in the operation of common office machines, including popular computer-driven word processing, spreadsheet and file maintenance programs.
Ability to make routine administrative decisions independently in accordance with laws, regulations, County policies and procedures, and to solve problems, and answer questions of the general public and development community.
Ability to develop and modify work procedures, methods and processes to improve efficiency of department processes.
Ability to type accurately at a moderate to high rate of speed.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to exercise considerable tact and courtesy in frequent contact with public officials and the general public.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
