Wilson & Company is seeking a motivated graduate or undergraduate student to join our Funding Services team as a Funding Services Intern. This internship provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience supporting communities and public agencies in identifying, pursuing, and administering funding for critical infrastructure projects.

The Funding Services Intern will work alongside funding specialists, grant administrators, project managers, engineers, planners, and other technical professionals to support state and federal funding initiatives. The position will provide exposure to multiple stages of the funding lifecycle, including funding research and strategy, grant application development, technical writing, data collection and analysis, and post-award grant administration.

Projects may include water and wastewater, transportation, drainage and stormwater, parks and recreation, public facilities, and other community infrastructure improvements.

Essential Job Functions

The Funding Services Intern may assist with the following activities:

  • Research federal, state, local, and private funding opportunities for infrastructure projects.
  • Review funding program guidelines, notices of funding opportunities, and agency requirements to identify applicant and project eligibility, funding levels, match requirements, deadlines, and evaluation criteria.
  • Assist with the preparation of grant applications, including project narratives, community needs descriptions, and supporting documentation.
  • Research and compile demographic, economic, safety, infrastructure, and other data to support grant applications and funding strategies.
  • Assist with technical writing, editing, proofreading, and quality control of grant applications and related documents.
  • Coordinate with Funding Services team members and technical staff to gather project information, cost estimates, schedules, maps, exhibits, and other application materials.
  • Support post-award grant administration activities, which may include reviewing grant requirements, organizing project documentation, preparing progress reports, tracking expenditures, and assisting with reimbursement or disbursement requests.
  • Participate in internal team meetings and, when appropriate, meetings with clients, funding agencies, and project teams.
  • Assist with special projects and other Funding Services initiatives as assigned.

Required Skills And Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in public administration, public policy, planning, business, communications, economics, political science, engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong research, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to review detailed program requirements and summarize complex information clearly and accurately.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet established deadlines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Interest in grant funding, public infrastructure, or community development.

Through this internship, the student will have the opportunity to:

  • Gain an understanding of how local governments and public agencies fund infrastructure projects.
  • Develop experience researching and interpreting state and federal funding programs.
  • Strengthen professional and technical writing skills through participation in grant application development.
  • Learn how multidisciplinary teams develop funding strategies and prepare competitive grant applications.
  • Gain exposure to federal and state grant compliance and post-award administration requirements.
  • Develop experience communicating and collaborating with funding professionals, engineers, planners, project managers, public agencies, and community stakeholders.
  • Gain practical experience connecting public-sector needs, infrastructure planning, and available funding resources.
