Director of Nursing (DON/DNS)

Location: Willowbrook Post Acute – Pendleton, Oregon
Job Type: Full-Time, Exempt
Reports To: Administrator

Willowbrook Post Acute is a 59-bed skilled nursing facility that consistently operates at 95% occupancy, typically maintaining a census of 57–59 residents, with approximately a 20–25% skilled mix. This is not a turnaround situation. We have a strong, experienced team in place and a stable operation with a solid clinical foundation.

We are currently wrapping up a successful engagement with an experienced career interim Director of Nursing and are looking for the right leader to step in as our permanent Director of Nursing. We are seeking someone who can build on the progress already in place, support and develop our nursing team, and continue driving strong clinical outcomes and regulatory compliance.

Willowbrook is located in Pendleton, Oregon, a rural Eastern Oregon community known for its small-town charm, strong sense of community, and slower pace of life.

The Director of Nursing is responsible for leading and overseeing all nursing operations within the facility. This role combines hands-on clinical leadership with department oversight, staff development, quality improvement, and close collaboration with the Administrator and interdisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership and management of the nursing department
  • Develop, implement, and maintain nursing policies and procedures in accordance with state and federal regulations
  • Ensure resident safety, dignity, and consistently high standards of clinical care
  • Recruit, hire, train, mentor, and support nursing staff
  • Conduct performance evaluations and address disciplinary or performance concerns as needed
  • Develop and provide in-service training and ongoing clinical education
  • Oversee medication management and pharmacy-related processes
  • Serve as a liaison between physicians, residents, families, nursing staff, and the interdisciplinary team
  • Participate actively in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement initiatives, utilization review, and resident care conferences
  • Oversee MDS coordination, care planning, and clinical documentation processes
  • Take an active leadership role during state surveys and oversee required plans of correction and follow-up
  • Monitor staffing, departmental budgets, clinical reporting, and resource utilization
  • Stay current on regulatory changes and ensure the clinical team is educated on new requirements
  • Provide direct, hands-on resident care when needed
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of resident and employee information

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Directly and indirectly supervise the Assistant Director of Nursing/Resident Care Managers and all nursing staff
  • Develop strong nursing leaders and promote accountability throughout the department
  • Work closely with staffing and department leadership to maintain appropriate coverage and continuity of care

Qualifications

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing
  • Previous nursing leadership or management experience in skilled nursing or long-term care strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of long-term care regulations, survey readiness, and clinical best practices
  • Experience with PointClickCare preferred
  • Strong communication, leadership, organization, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to lead a team while remaining approachable and willing to assist clinically when needed

Why Join Willowbrook?

This is an opportunity to step into a stable, highly occupied building with an established team, rather than taking on a turnaround project. You will have the opportunity to continue building on a strong clinical foundation, develop your nursing leadership team, and have a meaningful impact on both resident outcomes and facility culture.
