VETERINARY TECHNICIAN
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The ideal candidate is experienced and possesses the highest proficiency and competency. They have the most profound technical knowledge and skill level. Aid the Doctor in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail. They have a significant role in communicating with and educating clients about their pets and mentorship and training of other staff. The ideal candidate will be an energetic self-starter who likes to stay busy and will help set a fast pace.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- A minimum of 5 years experience as a veterinary technician is required
- California RVT license preferred
- Familiarity with Cornerstone Software is preferred
PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be comfortable working in a hospital that specializes in theriogenology/reproduction.
- Is well-spoken and approaches job duties in a mature nature.
- They genuinely enjoy working with animals and can work with them even when stressed, ill, or in pain.
- Can stay calm and efficient during a medical crisis.
- Is experienced in teamwork approach and works well with all hospital team members, including mentorship and training other staff.
- Has outstanding client communication skills
- Physical Effort: Work requires lifting and carrying animals (will be assisted by other staff members in lifting animals over 40 lbs.). Walks or stands for extended periods; frequently works in a bent position.
- Work Conditions: Exposure to unpleasant odors, noises, and animal feces. They may be exposed to bites, scratches, and contagious diseases.
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
- Can proficiently perform venipuncture and catheterization in the most challenging patients.
- Can proficiently restrain pets even when large, difficult, or fractious following Fear Free protocols
- Can induce anesthesia and intubation.
- Can assist the veterinarian in medical, surgical, and dental procedures; prepare patients for surgery; administer anesthesia; monitor patients during surgery and recovery; administer fluids.
- Can assist in complicated surgeries and knows proper gowning, gloving, and sterile techniques.
- Properly care for all surgical materials; keep the operating room stocked and prepared for surgery.
- Can perform routine dental prophylaxis and multiple root dental extractions.
- Can perform advanced medical math/dose calculations and constant rate infusions.
- Understands usage, dosage, and side effects for commonly used prescription drugs and can readily explain them to clients.
- Understands common vaccinations and vaccination protocols with the ability to explain these to clients.
- Knows all common preventative medications and can explain their use to clients.
- Can explain necessary follow-up and homecare instructions.
- Can handle clients' medical questions confidently and direct them to veterinarians when appropriate.
- Understands the importance of a clean and orderly facility and does not hesitate to clean or organize as part of regular job duties.
- Can give SQ, IM, and IV injections (with or without IV Port).
- Can perform ultrasound-guided cystocentesis and urinary catheterization.
- Can apply bandages and splints.
- Can provide compassionate care to patients and clients.
- Dependable arrives at shifts on time and is committed to upholding the hospital's core values.
- Can conduct oneself confidently and professionally even when stressed or focused on individual tasks.
- Can recognize and respond to emergency procedures such as control of bleeding, resuscitation with oxygen, intubation, and CPR
- Can perform physical assessments and can keep accurate medical records following hospital policy.
