What are the responsibilities and job description for the Animal Health Supervisor position at Williamson County?

Reporting directly to the Operations Manager, responsible for overseeing the animal health team and health of animals in the shelter and foster homes, including supervision and training of staff, volunteers, and fosters regarding animal medical care, and ensuring safe operations. Manages and implements programs to promote wellness within the shelter and the community, in order to promote Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter (WCRAS) mission and goals.

  • Monitors the general health of shelter animals, ensures nutritional, housing, and medical needs are met, and approves outside medical treatments, as needed
  • Ensures health staff productivity and safety, cleanliness, and adherence to all state guidelines regarding health of animals in the shelter and foster
  • Supervises health care staff and volunteers within the facility; directs work and provides continual feedback, evaluations, and training
  • Hires, schedules, promotes, disciplines, and terminates health care staff
  • Assumes all duties of any health team staff member on a temporary or emergency basis
  • Monitors timecards for all health care staff, and approves and enters time off requests
  • Supervises, trains, and directs Animal Health Technicians, Volunteers, and Community Service workers, and assists as needed
  • Conducts health care staff meetings to review procedures and workplace issues, and facilitates improvements and morale
  • Utilizes shelter software to maintain information about animals, including medical histories
  • Oversees animal remedial care and euthanasia
  • Ensures Animal Health Technicians receive training, support, and assistance for proper technique and administration of euthanasia drugs
  • Reports trends of medical symptoms and conditions affecting the shelter population
  • Collaborates with surgery staff to schedule surgeries and spay/neuter procedures/clinics
  • Maintains controlled substance records and assists in county drug audits
  • Provides 24/7 response to foster families on emergency basis for medical needs and/or approval of emergency medical treatments at alternative facilities
  • Establishes, strengthens, and maintains relationships with veterinary partners
  • Reports all loss, risk, and safety issues or conditions to the Operations Manager
  • Maintains accurate inventory of medical supplies
  • Participates in continuing education opportunities to ensure compliance with industry standards, and to remain current on shelter medicine protocols
  • Educates the community about shelter programs
  • Plans and executes various clinics
  • Participates in weekly leadership meetings
  • Performs special duties as assigned

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Position involves prolonged standing, walking, twisting, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, and other fine motor repetitive motions
  • Position requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine motor coordination
  • Position involves lifting and carrying of animals and equipment weighing up to fifty (50) pounds, or up to one hundred (100) pounds with assistance, and exertion of up to twenty-five (25) pounds of force to move objects
  • Position involves hearing and/or seeing alert cues regarding animal and staff security
  • Position involves maintaining composure in a high-stress environment

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

  • Work tasks are conducted indoors and outdoors
  • May work outside in inclement weather, including extreme heat, cold and wet conditions Frequent handling of animals, including contact with waste and blood
  • Exposure to unpleasant smells and a noisy and wet environment associated with a shelter
  • Frequent exposure animals that are agitated or injured that may attempt to bite or scratch
  • Position involves working in a high-volume, fast-paced environment
  • Position involves working with distressed individuals

IRREGULAR HOURS

  • Work outside of regular shelter hours is required; on-call 24/7 as emergency care liaison
  • Essential personnel for emergency situations, at discretion of Director
  • Regular attendance is required

  • High school diploma and three (3) years of veterinary technician experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Two (2) years of demonstrated supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated management knowledge to include fiscal and budgeting practices and procedures
  • Demonstrated customer service and professional communication skills
  • Prior experience identifying signs and symptoms of animal illnesses, injuries, and behavioral issues, drawing blood from animals, performing injections, administering medications, and performing basic veterinary testing procedures
  • Basic computer skills, to include knowledge of Microsoft Office

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Required within thirty (30) days of employment

  • Valid driver’s license

Required within 120 days (4 months) of employment

  • Euthanasia certificate

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Prior experience with Oracle software, Kronos software, and PetPoint
  • Licensed Vet Technician
  • Bilingual (Spanish)
