What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Manager-Transit position at Williamsburg County Transit System?
OVERVIEW:
The purpose of this classification is to perform supervisory and technical tasks to ensure the proper maintenance, repair and cleaning of all vehicles utilized by the Transit Authority. Provides guidance and supervision to assigned staff. Orders, stocks, and manages parts and supply inventory. Reports to the Transit Director.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Instructs, assigns, and reviews work of subordinates; maintains standards through the effective coordination of activities; allocates personnel; acts on employee problems; provides recommendations regarding disciplinary action and salary issues.
Prepare work order requests for maintenance or repair on vehicles utilized by the Authority and distribute to mechanics for completion; ensures that work orders are completed efficiently and properly.
Oversees, coordinates, and assists in the maintenance and repair of departmental vehicles as needed; performs tune-ups; checks fuel levels; changes oil and fluids; changes tires; completes engine repairs; rebuilds and repairs gasoline and diesel engines; rebuilds and repairs electrical systems and air conditioning systems; repairs air and hydraulic brake systems; test drives vehicles to ensure proper operation.
Determines the extent of repair work needed on various vehicles and sends vehicles for outside work. Receives and responds to road service calls.
Performs related tasks to support daily operations; manages parts and supply inventory; prepares and maintains various maintenance records; picks up supplies; assists in cleaning vehicles and buses.
Operates and utilizes a wide variety of equipment and tools in performing duties to include wrenches, oil pumps, drill press, tire machine, and related mechanical tools.
Ensures compliance with safety regulations and standards in all maintenance activities including regular inspections, maintenance checks, and safety training for maintenance personnel.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
A criminal background check will be completed on selected applicant.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent with vocational/technical school training in mechanical maintenance and repair supplemented by a minimum of five years related experience including work as a diesel mechanic; or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must possess a valid commercial driver’s license, Class B.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and/or rapid adjustments.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data information.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; the ability to interpret graphs.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgement concerning choices of action.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgement, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties, which are often characterized by frequent change.
ADA COMPLIANCE:
Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which ma involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, or rude/irate customers.
WORK CONDITIONS:
The work is regularly performed in a relatively safe, secure and stable work environment. Standard operating hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with the ability to work after hours when necessary. Scheduled hours/days, job location, duties and any other information contained herein are subject to change. May be required to work extra hours and to perform extra or different duties during emergency situations.
COMPENSATION:
The starting annual salary for the Service Manager of Williamsburg County Transit will be market competitive depending upon the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate. An excellent fringe benefit plan will be provided. This position is unclassified and reports to the Transit Director.
