In the Spring the Equipment Assistant will be assistant in spring football and baseball laundry and game day set-up. Duties include but are not limited to: • Responsible for daily laundering and storage of all practice and game uniforms. • Supervise and directing student workers assisting the Equipment Staff. • Assist in maintaining an accurate, up-to-date inventory of all equipment and apparel for all sports working out of Kaplan Arena and the Jimmye Laycock Football Center. • Packing and unpacking for away games, arranging for transportation of equipment. • Clean and repair equipment as needed and assist in the upkeep of fields and facilities. Job Description: Required Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent. Valid driver’s license and two years of driving experience. Demonstrated organizational and administrative skills. Computer skills, i.e., basic to intermediate skill level in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Demonstrated ability to work independently and with others in a team environment including working with the public and interdepartmental personnel. Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations relative to equipment purchasing, allocation, and retention. Basic sewing skills for garment alteration and repair. Two years of football student manager experience. Ability to drive a 26 ft. box truck. Conditions of Employment: AEMA Certification must be obtained within one year of the hire date. Must maintain a valid driver’s license. Subject to some evening, weekend, and holiday work. Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Ability to constantly lift, push, pull, and carry items on a routine basis. Ability to walk up and down stairs inclines, and hills on a daily basis. Ability to work well with others Subject to occasional travel. This position is an hourly position. All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed on average 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve-month period beginning May 1 each year. This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor. This is a restricted position, subject to the continued availability of funding. Compensation: $16 - $18 per hour, commensurate with experience and internal alignment. 40% - Fall Responsibilities (football): Be present at all football games to help with coordinating and overseeing field setup, including the sideline communication system and locker room setup. Supervise and direct student workers assisting the Equipment Staff. Assist the Head Equipment Manager of Athletics with inspections of all game equipment. Football Game and Practice Preparation: Set up for football home and away games, all practices, and assist with locker room preparation. Home Games: Pack sideline trunks with jerseys, pants, shoes, pads, helmets, rain gear, and coats. Distribute game gear to players, coaches, and auxiliary staff. Contact the opposing team’s equipment manager to determine any supplies that may be needed. Set up and break down the visiting team locker room, ensuring available supplies of towels, drinks, and other items as needed. Assist in game ops set-up and breakdown. Away Games: Distribute travel bags containing game gear to the players and coaches. Arrange for a large rental vehicle to transport equipment to and from airports or the site. Responsible for transportation of all equipment to and from the game site. Pack trunks with jerseys, pants, shoes, pads, helmets, rain gear, and coats. Load the rental vehicle with travel bags, trunks, team equipment, and video equipment. Contact the opposing team’s equipment manager to advise of arrival time and supplies needed. Post-arrival unpacks truck; set up locker room; hangs jerseys and pants; unpack travel bags. Distribute practice gear for Friday’s workout. Distribute game gear. After the game, collect all equipment; pack gear; load the truck. After returning to Williamsburg, ensure the truck is unloaded; gear unpacked; soiled laundry collected. When needed will be the second driver for Equipment’s 26 ft. box truck. Post-Game Responsibilities: Inspect all game equipment; clean and repair as needed. Washing jersey and game loops. 20% - Equipment and Supplies: Assist the Head Equipment Manager of Athletics with the purchase and maintenance of all equipment, including the sideline communication system, and apparel for the football program. Provide day-to-day issue and maintenance of equipment for specific athletic teams requesting assistance. Coordinate all purchases with each Head Coach or their designee liaison. Assist in maintaining an accurate, up-to-date inventory of all equipment and apparel for all sports working out of Kaplan Arena and the Jimmye Laycock Football Center. Ensure the ACS Inventory system is up to date with all inventories. Oversee the issue and retention of all equipment and apparel. Assist the Head Equipment Manager of Athletics with the annual reconditioning of applicable football equipment. Coordinate with individual sports teams for the combined purchase and distribution of unified expendable supplies. Coordinate with the Athletic Business Office to assure accurate transfer and billing of expenses to the appropriate teams. Maintain the knowledge to properly fit all football protective equipment. Provide proper sizing and fitting of necessary apparel and equipment for specific athletic teams requesting assistance. Maintain knowledge of and pursue continued education of NCAA rules relative to equipment purchasing, allocation, and retention. Work to gauge and ensure the ongoing education of all players, coaches, and athletic trainers regarding the appropriate use and maintenance of various athletic equipment. Clean and repair equipment as needed. 5% - Baseball Responsibilities: Assist the Assistant Equipment Manager with baseball equipment operations. Set up and break down the visiting team's locker room, ensuring that towels, drinks, and other necessary supplies are available. Assist with visiting team laundry. Assist with the setup for baseball game days. Assist in baseball laundry and picking up and dropping off uniforms. Aid in planning the uniform schedule. Support bat testing activities. Communicate with visiting team to determine necessary supplies and breakdown. 15% - Laundry Operations: Provide daily efficient laundry service for athletic teams throughout the academic year utilizing the various laundry facilities including the Jimmye Laycock Football Center. At a minimum, provide ongoing laundry service to the following teams: Football – Jimmye Laycock Center Men’s Track – Jimmye Laycock Center. Women’s Track – Jimmye Laycock Center Men’s Cross Country – Jimmye Laycock Center. Women’s Cross Country – Jimmye Laycock Center Baseball – Plumeri Park. Provide laundry assistance at Kaplan Arena when needed. 10% - Facilities Support: Assist in the upkeep of the Montgomery field. Assist in Providing support for facilities and operations of all athletic venues. Aid Kaplan Arena Equipment Manager with various facilities support needed. Assist the Assistant AD Facilities and Operations in-game day and facilities set-up and breakdown. Assist in coordinating the maintenance of all athletic equipment areas and laundry facilities so they are maintained in a clean and orderly manner. Arrange Kaplan Arena equipment room and storage room to be as efficient to use as possible. 5% - Event Support: Provide support as a “host” to visiting teams at Plumeri Park and Zable Stadium. Co-coordinate locker room assignments to include setting up officials’ and visiting team lockers. Distribute, collect, and launder shower towels. Participate in sports recruiting events regarding the overview of Equipment program functions. 5% - Other: Maintain certification through the Athletic Equipment Managers Association (AEMA).
