SUBSTITUTE ACTIVITY LEADER - SUMMER DAY CAMPS (Seasonal)

JOB DESCRIPTION:
General Statement of Duties: Monitors and supervises children in a variety of recreation activities; develops and recommends program activities and projects; ensures safety of children who are participating in the program; does related work as required.
Distinguishing Features of the Class: An employee in this classification is responsible for ensuring the safety of children in the program while supervising and assisting middle school-aged youth in recreation activities such as games, activities, teen dances, and special events; and for developing and recommending program activities and projects. Work is performed under the supervision of a Recreation Supervisor or Recreation Coordinator, with some positions receiving daily on-site direction from a Site Coordinator. Supervision is not normally a responsibility of positions in this classification.
Examples Of Essential Duties Performed: (Illustrative only. Any single position of a class will not necessarily involve all of the duties listed, and many positions will involve duties that are not listed.)
- Monitors participant safety with various measures including attendance taking, active supervision, and frequent head counts. Ensures the safety of all participants and program staff at the site.
- Supervise and assist middle school-aged youth in a variety of recreational, educational, and enrichment activities; leads/directs activities as requested.
- Help implement systems of accountability for youth. Provide homework assistance and advises students in multiple content areas including study skills.
- Handle disciplinary and accountability issues with youth, which includes implementing and monitoring age-appropriate behavior corrections.
- Support the Springfield Public School's behavior management systems into site and programmatic design.
- Establish and maintain communication with direct supervisor, program staff, school staff, community agencies and partners and families.
- Develop and recommends program activities and projects. Prepare site; set up supplies and/or equipment for activities; perform necessary clean up.
- Report cases of suspected child abuse to supervisor and contacts Services to Children and Families as necessary.
- Attend all staff meetings and trainings as required.
- Administer First Aid/CPR and respond to emergencies as required.
- Order and/or purchase necessary supplies.
- Performs other job-related duties or tasks as required.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge: Knowledge of behavior management systems; planning and implementing recreational and educational activies; record keeping.
Skills: The administration of basic first aid and CPR; leading activities for children. Familiarity with basic computer operations and software including Microsoft Office and email.
Abilities: Effective written and verbal communication; work successfully with middle school-aged youth, parents, teachers, school administrators, and staff; deal effectively with behavioral issues with youth.
Physical Demands of the Position: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, bend, kneel, stoop, communicate, reach and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility including the ability to move materials weighing up to 25 pounds on a regular basis boxes/bags of activity materials, snack foods, etc. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while working with children in activities. Persons with special needs may be able to perform the essential duties of this class with reasonable accommodation. Experience and Training: High school graduation or equivalency and one year of experience working with teens; or any satisfactory combination of experience and training which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the above-described duties.
Necessary Special Requirements: Possession of or ability to obtain current First Aid and CPR/AED certificates; an Oregon Food Handler Permit; and other AFS/DHS required reporting requirements as defined. Because this job is considered safety sensitive, a drug screen test, and ability to pass a criminal background check will be required prior to employment.
