Tax Administrator

Wilkes County is seeking applicants for the position of Tax Administrator. An employee in this class plans, organizes and directs the work of a staff responsible for listing real and personal property, property appraisal, billing and collecting taxes, in-house revaluation, GIS and maintenance of property records and other files. Work also includes handling appeals of tax assessments and defending the County’s decisions before the Board of Equalization and Review and the North Carolina Property Tax Commission. Work involves developing policies, procedures, and methods for program operations in accordance with State statutes and local ordinances; handling budget and personnel matters; and working with sensitive and controversial issues in tax assessment, collection and delinquent tax collection procedures. Significant independent judgement and initiative are required to accomplish goals. Work is performed under the administrative supervision of the County Manager and is reviewed through conferences, records and reports, feedback from the public and audits of records. Graduation from a college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in business, economics, public administration, or related field and considerable experience in property appraisal, and billing and collections operations, including considerable supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Certification as a Tax Administrator within two years of employment is required. Open until filled. Pay: $79,753.00 - $117,723.00 per year
