Instructor of Social & Human Services (9 months)

Job Description
The Social & Human Services instructor must be a dynamic, student-centered educator responsible for the planning, selection, organization, implementation, supervision, facilitation, and evaluation of the total learning experience of Social & Human Services students. The instructor will contribute to student success through teaching, advising, curriculum development, community engagement, program recruitment, and partnership development with human service agencies throughout the college service area.

Essential Duties Summary
Job duties will include:

Teaching and Learning
  • Plan, create, and maintain a classroom environment conducive to student learning.
  • Teach classes as assigned by the Program Director of Social & Human Services.
  • Deliver instruction through multiple delivery modalities, including traditional face-to-face classes, hybrid instruction, online courses (synchronous & asynchronous), and Career and College Promise (CCP) courses in area high schools
  • Develop and revise course materials, lesson plans, assessments, and instructional resources.
  • Select and utilize textbooks, instructional materials, and educational resources appropriate for Social & Human Services.
  • Utilize the College’s learning management system and instructional technologies.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, grading, and student records.
  • Maintain current knowledge of the discipline and incorporate innovative instructional strategies and technologies into teaching.
  • Ensure alignment with North Carolina Community College System curriculum standards and maintain accurate course information to keep the Wilkes Community College catalog and website information current and accurate.

Recruitment and Student Support
  • Provide academic support, mentoring, and advising students.
  • Participate in student recruitment and retention initiatives.
  • Represent the program at recruitment events, career fairs, community outreach activities, and high school visits.
  • Support Career and College Promise partnerships with local school systems.
  • Assist students in identifying transfer opportunities, employment pathways, and professional development opportunities.
  • Foster a supportive learning environment that promotes student engagement and success.
Program Development and Community Engagement
  • Assist with curriculum review, development, and assessment activities.
  • Assist with program outcomes assessment and continuous improvement processes.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community agencies and organizations.
  • Assist with Work-Based Learning internship and field placement development.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging trends and workforce needs within the human services profession.
  • Participate in departmental, divisional, and college committees.
  • Attend faculty meetings, professional development activities, and institutional events.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • At least a master’s degree in human services, social work, counseling, rehabilitation counseling, marriage and family therapy, addiction studies, or a closely related field from an academic institution accredited by a regional or national accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE).Associate degree in a healthcare-related field from a regionally accredited institution.


In addition to the degree, the full-time faculty must have the following:
  • Minimum of three years of professional experience in one or more of the following areas: mental health services, substance use treatment or recovery, community-based human services, social services, case management, and/or behavioral health services.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with instructional technology and learning management systems.

Preferred Qualifications

Physical Demands
Work is primarily performed under general supervision in the classroom, laboratory, office, healthcare, and clinical environments with appropriate climate controls. Travel between campuses, healthcare facilities, and community locations may be required. Evening and weekend work may be necessary to support instructional schedules and workforce training needs.

Essential functions: Positions require lifting, manual dexterity, ability to communicate effectively, ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods, and ability to move between classrooms, labs, and clinical sites. Must be able to demonstrate and assist with healthcare-related procedures requiring fine motor skills and physical coordination.
Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body; involves sitting only occasionally, walking and standing are required regularly, incumbents may be required to kneel, crouch/squat, crawl, climb, stoop, turn/twist, balance, reach, or handle.
Mental Application: Requires memory for details and content of assigned healthcare disciplines, critical thinking, adaptability, emotional stability, problem-solving, instructional planning, organizational skills, and effective decision-making.

Salary Grade

Salary
Salary Range: $48,600 to $58,000 based on education and experience in accordance with the college salary plan.
