Primary Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Teach undergraduate courses in mass communications, which may include Introduction to Mass Communications, Media Writing, Journalism, Broadcasting, Public Relations, Digital Media Production, Social Media Strategy, Media Law and Ethics, Media and Society, and/or upper-level courses aligned with the candidate's area of specialization
  • Integrate current industry practices, emerging technologies, and professional standards into course instruction
  • Guide students in developing strong communication skills across multiple media platforms, including writing, visual storytelling, and digital content creation
  • Provide academic mentoring and professional guidance to support student preparation for careers in journalism, broadcasting, public relations, digital media, or related fields
  • Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum development, assessment practices, and continuous program improvement that reflects evolving industry demands
  • Actively participate in departmental, college, and university service activities, including support for student media organizations
  • Engage in ongoing scholarship, professional development, and industry engagement to maintain currency with rapidly changing media technologies and communication trends
  • Report to the Department Chair or designated administrator and contribute to departmental goals
Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Mass Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Media Studies, or closely related field from a regionally accredited institution
  • Demonstrated ability or strong potential to deliver effective, student-centered instruction in communications and media
  • Strong understanding of the contemporary media landscape, ethical practices, and professional standards
  • Excellent communication skills and commitment to creating an inclusive, supportive learning environment
  • Willingness to engage collaboratively in curriculum review and departmental initiatives

Preferred Qualifications

  • Terminal degree (Ph.D.) in Mass Communications, Journalism, Media Studies, or related discipline
  • Previous college or university teaching experience, particularly at the undergraduate level
  • Professional experience in journalism, broadcasting, public relations, digital media, or related communications fields
  • Proficiency with industry-standard media production tools, software, and technologies
  • Record of scholarly activity, creative work, professional engagement, or media production
  • Ability to teach across multiple areas within mass communications
  • Experience advising student media organizations (campus newspaper, radio station, yearbook, etc.)
  • Portfolio demonstrating professional media work or student project outcomes
