Description:

The Nurse Manager oversees the nursing and medical services at Wildwood Recovery Center, ensuring evidence-based clinical care, regulatory compliance, efficient operations, and coordination across multidisciplinary teams. As a leadership role, the Nurse Manager will supervise nursing staff, develop policies and procedures, oversee medication management, support medical/clinical collaboration, drive quality improvement, and maintain the highest standards of client safety and wellness.

Key Responsibilities

1. Nursing Leadership & Staff Supervision

  • Supervise and mentor the nursing team, including Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), through scheduling, training, performance evaluations, and ongoing professional development.
  • Ensure nursing staff maintain appropriate licensure, certifications, and competency requirements.
  • Oversee staffing models and scheduling to ensure adequate 24/7 nursing coverage and safe nurse-to-client ratios.
  • Provide leadership and clinical guidance to nursing staff during complex client care situations.
  • Promote trauma-informed, recovery-oriented, and culturally responsive care across the nursing team.
  • Ensure effective shift handoffs and clear communication between nursing staff and other departments.

2. Clinical Care & Medication Management

  • Oversee nursing assessments, health screenings, and care planning for clients receiving residential substance use disorder treatment.
  • Ensure nursing documentation, assessments, and care plans comply with Virginia Board of Nursing, DBHDS, Medicaid, and facility standards.
  • Oversee medication administration practices, including medication-assisted treatment (MAT) protocols, medication administration records (MAR), and medication reconciliation.
  • Ensure safe storage, handling, and disposal of medications, including controlled substances, in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor client physical health conditions, withdrawal symptoms, and co-occurring medical concerns.
  • Coordinate with the Medical Director and external medical providers regarding medication changes, treatment plans, and health concerns.
  • Respond to nursing emergencies, medical incidents, and transfers of care to higher levels of medical treatment when necessary.

3. Quality Assurance, Safety & Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure nursing operations meet all applicable licensure and regulatory standards including Virginia Board of Nursing, DBHDS, Medicaid, and Joint Commission requirements.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain nursing policies, procedures, protocols, and clinical standards of practice.
  • Oversee infection control practices, medication safety protocols, and emergency medical response procedures.
  • Lead nursing-related quality improvement initiatives and track key metrics including medication errors, adverse events, and health outcomes.
  • Review incident reports and adverse events and implement corrective action plans when needed.
  • Assist with audits, inspections, accreditation surveys, and regulatory reviews.

4. Coordination, Communication & Program Operations

  • Collaborate with the Clinical Director, Medical Director, and executive leadership to integrate nursing operations with overall program goals.
  • Work closely with clinical, behavioral health, residential, and case management teams to ensure coordinated client care.
  • Communicate effectively with referral sources, external medical providers, pharmacies, and families regarding client health needs when appropriate.
  • Monitor nursing supplies, medication inventory, and collaborate with pharmacy partners to ensure cost-effective medication management.
  • Support admissions and intake processes by ensuring timely nursing assessments and medical screenings.
  • Provide input to leadership regarding operational improvements, program development, and client care needs.

Requirements:

Education and Experience

  • Active, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the Commonwealth of Virginia required.
  • CPR/First Aid certification required (or obtained within 30 days of hire).
  • Experience in substance use, behavioral health, detox, or psychiatric care strongly preferred.
  • Previous supervisory or nursing leadership experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of medication-assisted treatment protocols and behavioral health nursing practices preferred.

Skills and Abilities Needed for Success

  • Ability to supervise and mentor clinical staff while maintaining professional and ethical standards.
  • Strong knowledge of substance use disorder treatment, withdrawal management, and medication-assisted treatment (MAT).
  • Ability to lead and supervise nursing staff in a residential behavioral health environment.
  • Knowledge of Virginia nursing regulations, DBHDS standards, and healthcare documentation practices.
  • Strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills in medical and behavioral health situations.
  • Ability to coordinate care across multidisciplinary treatment teams.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Commitment to trauma-informed, person-centered, and recovery-oriented care.
