Schedule: 7:15 am - 2:45 pm

POSITION SUMMARY: The Student Support Specialist will serve as an integral member of the middles school team in providing evidence-based strategies to support a coordinated and effective school climate, classroom management, social-emotional learning, restorative practices, and behavioral interventions process at schools as part of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support/Response to Intervention (MTSS/RTI). The Student Support Specialist will work to empower students, develop appropriate decision making skills and build healthy relationships. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  

  • Implement evidenced-based proactive approaches to support student behaviors in the middle schools.
  • Assist teachers in the identification and development of individualized behavior interventions intended to meet the social and emotional needs of students; using evidence based strategies.
  • Participate and support professional development around student behavior interventions.
  • Teach targeted Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) intervention to small groups of students using Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) research-based strategies and resources. 
  • Collaborate with middle school teams to identify the SEL needs of students and to problem solve with teams to develop best practices/interventions for continuous academic and SEL growth. 
  • Facilitates restorative justice interventions, such as restorative conversations, restorative conferences, and re-entry meetings
  • Model a culture for restorative justice and positive discipline practice
  • Acts as the point person for out-of-classroom interventions.
  • Coordinates and implements restorative justice practices that teach students proactive problem solving.
  • Collaborate with students and staff to develop and implement restorative justice action plans.

 

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  

  • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of clienteles, including district personnel regarding Board of Education Goals, Mission and Vision, and Strategic Decision.
  • Respect for student, teachers, parents and support staff.
  • Exercises sound judgment on sensitive issues.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple programs and locations by giving direction and leading continuous improvement efforts.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with children, families, department staff, other district personnel and the community.
  • Ability to demonstrate respect and sensitivity to the individual needs of families.
  • Ability to judge when situations and/or information should be called to the attention of the supervisor.
  • Ability to travel to different locations and transport materials and equipment.
  • Calm demeanor for dealing with the needs of students.
  • Knowledge of IEP/504 processes and discipline processes.  

 

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

  1. Bachelor’s degree in an education-related field preferred; teaching certificate preferred; substitute certification required.
  2. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and communication skills with staff, parents and patrons.
  3. Demonstrated success at designing and maintaining a positive, collaborative culture.
  4. Ability to interact with a wide variety of persons in a challenging setting.

 

EQUIPMENT USED:  

  • Standard office equipment.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  

  • Ability to work in a variety of locations, travel throughout the District, work non-traditional hours which may include evenings and weekends and meet the physical demands of handling a variety of responsibilities.  
  • While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, hear, walk, stand and reach.
