Park Overview

Wildlife Prairie Park has often been referred to as a jewel in the Midwest. Located just outside of Peoria, Illinois, this 1800-acre zoological park is home to over 180 animals representing more than 60 species native to Illinois. Our guests come to learn about wolves, bison, waterfowl, black bear, elk, cougar, otter and much more. The park opened in 1978 and since its inception Wildlife Prairie Park strives to promote its mission of conservation, education, and recreation.

Position Summary

Building Maintenance Technicians are responsible for the maintenance, repair, and renovation of the Park’s facilities and property. This includes all lodging units as well as animal enclosures, offices, public buildings, and banquet halls. This position performs routine inspections of park facilities to identify maintenance needs while performing repairs and ensure buildings remain safe, functional, and welcoming for guests, staff, and animals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for establishing a quick diagnosis of building maintenance issues and finding solutions that ensure the Park’s safety while balancing time sensitivity and costs.
  • Directly handle a wide range of maintenance repairs including plumbing, appliances, electrical, HVAC, painting, drywall, flooring installation, pest control, roofing inspection and minor roof repair in accordance with internal requirements, manufacturer specifications, and safety policies.
  • Ensure all buildings are properly locked and secured after use to maintain safety and security standards.
  • Determine when highly skilled repair work from outside professionals or contractors is required.
  • Paint structures, drywall, and plaster, perform masonry work, and repair plumbing fixtures and woodwork.
  • Use hand and power tools while ensuring tools and equipment are properly maintained and repaired.
  • Follow company policies regarding necessary approvals for large maintenance tasks or expenditures.
  • Conduct routine inspections of park facilities and infrastructure to identify maintenance needs and perform preventative maintenance to ensure buildings, equipment, and systems remain safe, functional, and in good working condition.
  • Maintain and secure a spare parts inventory of basic maintenance tools and equipment and recommend the purchase of maintenance tools, equipment, and supplies as needed.
  • Document maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs using work orders, maintenance logs, or other tracking systems.
  • Comply with all OSHA regulations and any applicable laws regarding health, safety, or environmental requirements.
  • Report safety concerns, maintenance hazards, or facility issues promptly to supervisors to ensure a safe environment for staff and guests.
  • Assist the maintenance team in developing methods and procedures to improve facility efficiency and workflow.
  • Collaborate with other park departments to support operations and provide maintenance assistance as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Grounds Maintenance team to support park operations and perform duties as assigned.
  • Support a positive guest experience by ensuring park facilities, lodging units, and public areas remain clean, safe, and well maintained.
  • Ability to work effectively in various weather conditions including extreme temperatures, rain, snow, and other outdoor elements.
  • Attend meetings, conferences, and seminars both on and off site as assigned.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough understanding of building systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and structural components.
  • Familiarity with building codes, safety regulations, and maintenance best practices.
  • Knowledge of basic carpentry, painting, and repair techniques.
  • Knowledge of preventative maintenance programs to ensure proper care and upkeep of buildings and equipment.
  • Skilled in using hand and power tools, diagnostic equipment, and specialized maintenance tools.
  • Ability to troubleshoot building system issues such as HVAC malfunctions or plumbing leaks.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to prioritize maintenance tasks effectively.
  • Basic computer skills to track work orders, document repairs, and communicate via email.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to performing high-quality work.
  • Professional demeanor with a positive attitude and strong work ethic.
  • Ability to build positive working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, volunteers, and guests.

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training in building maintenance or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in building maintenance, facilities, or a related role preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

This position requires the ability to perform physical tasks including lifting, carrying, bending, climbing, and working in confined spaces. Employees may be required to work on ladders or elevated surfaces. The position regularly requires working outdoors in various weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, snow, and other environmental elements. The ability to lift up to 50 pounds is required.

Pay: From $22.00 per hour
