Wildlife Mississippi is seeking a motivated Biologist to support the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Theodore Roosevelt National Wildlife Refuge Complex. This position offers meaningful field experience with USFWS while contributing to the restoration and enhancement of waterfowl impoundments, wetlands, and forested wetlands in Mississippi and Louisiana.
The Biologist will help oversee hydrology agreements and awarded grants, track project goals and objectives, support financial and final reporting, and document restoration progress with photographs, spatial data, timelines, and contractor evaluations. The role requires strong field judgment, organization, communication, and the ability to coordinate work across partners and project sites.
The Theodore Roosevelt National Wildlife Refuge Complex contains approximately 150,000 acres of bottomland hardwoods and associated wetlands. USFWS, the Complex, and Wildlife Mississippi are important partners in one of the emphasis areas of the North American Waterfowl Management Plan, providing habitat for wintering, migrating, and resident birds while delivering conservation benefits for wildlife and people.
• Lead field oversight and coordination: Provide daily oversight of hydrology, construction, and restoration activities that improve habitat conditions for wintering waterfowl.
• Track project performance: Gather, compile, and analyze data to determine whether project goals are on track; report findings; evaluate outcomes; and identify issues requiring coordination or correction.
• Document restoration results: Prepare reports with photographs, spatial data, charts, graphs, timelines, evaluations, and clear explanations of project progress, delays, or developments.
• Support GIS and data workflows: Prepare field data for digitization, digitize data, and process information for use in ArcGIS.
• Coordinate with partners: Work cooperatively with Complex staff, Wildlife Mississippi, contractors, NGOs, and other partners to deliver restoration construction projects, water-control management, and related resource programs.
• Monitor wildlife and habitat conditions: Participate in wildlife monitoring by making field observations, gathering biological data, reporting findings, and assisting with information for environmental assessments or environmental impact statements.
• Work safely in field conditions: Perform duties responsibly in variable weather, remote locations, difficult terrain, and physically demanding circumstances.
