 General Description 

Clinical Supervisor provides oversight of the activities on the specified nursing unit during specific shifts with responsibility for the supervision of the patient care, personnel, and unit operations, including serving as a resource to staff, directing patient flow, assuring appropriate utilization of resources and providing oversight for the provisions of quality care in a manner satisfying to patients.

The Clinical Supervisor works collaboratively with the Departmental Director and is responsible for the oversight of daily operations as indicated including off shift and weekend supervision of nursing personnel. 

Essential Job Duties 

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a role model, demonstrating effective patient care, leadership and professional behavior.

  • Expertise in problem solving and decision making.
  • Ability to demonstrate time management, organization of work and the ability to prioritize work.
  • The Emergency Department Clinical Supervisor will be responsible for scheduling RNs and/or assisting with radiology studies (i.e. CTA and stress test) through the administration of medications, patient assessment, and monitoring as indicated.
  • Demonstrates the ability to resolve conflicts and effective communication.
  • Plans for and implements departmental schedule and staffing pattern that meets patient care needs and supports primary nursing with the appropriate level of experience and certifications.
  • Assists in managing the ADP payroll of staff, evaluating time/attendance, PSL, and PTO when the Departmental Director is off.
  • Collaborates with the Department Director with providing feedback on staff for performance evaluations and disciplinary action planning.
  • Participates in the recruitment process, including being part of the interview team and collaborating with the Department Director regarding the selection of staff.
  • Informs, teaches, and enforces adherence to new or revised hospital or departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assists with the coordination and development of staff meetings and departmental communication.
  • Facilitates the orientation of all new staff and promotes ongoing continuing education in collaboration with the Clinical Educator.
  • Systematically and continuously collects and assesses data in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team to provide therapeutic care for patients.
  • Time allocation will be 3–12-hour shifts with one of those shifts covering the 5th weekday that the Departmental Director is not scheduled to provide leadership coverage. 2 clinical shifts and 1 administrative shift.
  • The Emergency Supervisor’s clinical hours are to be mid shift while the administrative day can be earlier to ensure leadership coverage.
  • The Clinical Supervisor will collaborate with the Departmental Director by taking call during the Departmental Director’s vacation and 1 weekend a month.
  • The Departmental Director or Clinical Supervisor may be required to fill an open shift when unable to cover the shift to meet the needs of the unit. When this occurs the Director or Supervisor can adjust their hours accordingly to make up for the hours worked or email the CNO to be paid the hard to fill bonus compensation.
  • For Clinical Supervisors, remote work is not required because again they are doing the 2 clinical and 1 administrative 12-hour shifts. Therefore, there is no expectation that during days off the supervisor is to remote in for meetings as the Director will be able to cover.  Exception is for mandatory meetings or education.
  • This is not an all-inclusive list and is subject to change as indicated and approved.
  • Evaluates, works on the resolution of Departmental holds while collaborating with coding and Director.

Management of Resources:

  • Monitors the effectiveness of materials, supplies, and staffing management providing input regarding budget management.
  • Effective communication with the Departmental Director for problem-solving process of departmental needs.
  • Monitors and provides a safe and therapeutic environment for patients and staff.
  • Participate in the development of Departmental goals. Identifies and resolves problems and consults with the Departmental Director.
  • Collaborating with the Departmental Director on Unit Metrics, benchmarks, auditing and documenting data.
  • Collaborates with the Departmental Director in reviewing, investigating, and following up on patient concerns and quality calendar events and compliance.
  • Evaluates, works on the resolution of Departmental holds while collaborating with coding and Director.

Education and Outreach:

  • Participates in maintaining a healthy work environment, evaluates barriers, and promotes educational opportunities to achieve a healthy work environment.
  • Creates an environment in which intellectual curiosity is stimulated, evaluating staff’s educational needs, collaborate with the Clinical Educator, and is supportive of continued learning and empowerment.
  • Participates on departmental and hospital committees as indicated.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Ability to work: 3 – 12 hours
  • Availability for on-call supervisory oversight during Departmental Director vacation and 1 weekend a month.
  • Education: Registered Nurse
  • Work Experience: Minimum:
  • ED: Three (3) years of Critical Care, ED.
  • Acute: Three (3) years Med-Surg Telemetry.
  • Clinical Supervisor: Management RN experience. 
  • Licenses and Certifications: Registered Nurse licensed in Arizona
  • Current BLS, ACLS, PALS (ED), and TNCC (ED). (BLS is a minimum with ACLS, PALS, and TNCC within one year of hire (ED)

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Five (5) or more years of relevant experience in clinical practice. Management, Supervisory, or Charge RN experience with demonstrated success.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions 

Frequent standing, stooping, bending, stretching, squatting; must be able to stand/walk for up to 70% of the workday; must be able to lift, transfer, turn and position patients weighing up to 125 lbs. unassisted, or with the assistance of one for a resident weighing over 125 lbs. May be subjected to offensive odors and combative behavior.  Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 lbs. frequently and 50 lbs. occasionally.  May be exposed to communicable diseases including the HIV and HBV viruses.  Must be able to work paying close attention to detail with frequent interruptions.
