Classification: Exempt Job Family: Operations Reports to: Vice President External Relations Job Description Summary: OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES Responsible for directing an ambitious foundation and corporate giving program at Whitehead Institute. Reports to the Director of Advancement in the Office of Institutional Advancement. Works in close collaboration with the Associate Director, Research Development in the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) to support the overarching federal and foundation relations strategy for each Whitehead Institute Faculty Member and Whitehead Fellow. Holds direct responsibility for executing the tactical plan. CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES In collaboration with the Director of Advancement and under the strategic direction of the Associate Director, Research Development (OSP), execute upon a comprehensive foundation and corporate giving program for Whitehead Institute. Stay abreast of faculty research programs and Institute priorities. Develop and maintain strong relationships with Whitehead faculty, Whitehead fellows and post-doctoral trainees. Maintain up-to-date knowledge on current trends in foundation and LLC giving. Perform a lead role in educating and updating the IA team on faculty research interests; serve as a key advisor to IA in translating scientific discovery at Whitehead into specific outreach for individual donors. Participate with Director of Advancement and the VP for External Relations in developing individual strategies for major and principal gift prospects/donors who give through their private foundations and family offices. Develop and maintain portfolio of new and existing corporate and foundation relationships with the capacity to make major and principal gifts. Take a proactive role in cultivating new prospects with strong partnership potential and initiate appropriate outreach via email, phone calls, and visits. Manage foundation and corporate relationships at all stages of the gift/grant cycle. Develop compelling research-based proposals in collaboration with Whitehead faculty members; assist and advise faculty in creating high-impact scientific presentations for donors, foundation and corporations Oversee all aspects of grants management including drafting letters of inquiry, drafting cover letters, writing acknowledgement letters, coordinating the submission of materials, and drafting stewardship reports. Track all donor communications via a web-based project management system. Direct the planning and execution of all donor/prospect visits (on-site and off-site) and effectively Institute leadership and Whitehead faculty in such visits when appropriate to do so. Work closely with the Director of Advancement and the VP of Institutional Advancement on high-level written communications. Work collaboratively with the Whitehead Office for Sponsored Programs and Finance department on submission and reports. Work toward a monetary goal as deemed appropriate by leadership of Institutional Advancement. Perform other duties as necessitated by the position or as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree plus 5 – 7 years of relevant experience, or PhD required. Excellent written and oral communications skills; experience in communicating complex scientific information to a lay audience. Must be highly organized, self-motivated, flexible, and able to prioritize. Must be able to interact comfortably and productively with internal staff, principal investigators, postdoctoral fellows, and external constituents at all levels. Ability to innovate and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Ability to function effectively in a close-knit team environment. Ability to travel when required for meetings in other cities. Computer proficiency in Word, Excel, and Power Point.
