What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Software Engineer, Payments position at Whop?
About Whop:
Whop is the ultimate virtual market that lets people earn money by starting shops and creating content. We deliver $1.3B per year in income to people across the globe and have more than 1M monthly users.
About you:
We are looking for a Staff Engineer to scale the core payments systems of Whop. This is not a generic backend role, the only candidates we will consider are those who have:
- Production Rails experience and have built payments, risk, settlement, disputes, and fraud systems. You design for scale, always thinking in terms of millions of rows and failure points.
- Owned payments systems at a Stripe-scale company, a marketplace, or a startup that built its own infra. You know where Stripe and wrappers work and where they fail for digital products.
- Hands on understanding of how digital products and payments interact (risk, settlement, disputes, underwriting, fraud).
- Experience scaling backend systems that handle high-volume financial data (think tens of millions of rows, edge cases, bottlenecks).
What does the role look like?
The customer you are building for should be thought of as other client-side developers on our team consuming our API.
- Build and evolve payment rails, risk, and settlement systems inside our Rails-based backend.
- Create APIs and architecture patterns that other developers (internal external) can consume and build on.
- Work with founders, designers, and other engineers to turn messy real-world payment flows into clean, reliable abstractions.
- Prototype quickly, ship fast, and care about the details
- Write clean queries, intuitive function names, and easy to understand responses
