Summary

The Manager of Hog Procurement is responsible for supporting the Hog Procurement team with meeting plant supply needs for livestock at a competitive cost. They will also support in directing and coordinating activities of personnel engaged in the purchasing and receipt of livestock, and ensure processes are handled in an appropriate and humane manner according to company policies and USDA regulations. 

 

Education, Licensure and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university and 4 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience required. 
  • Prior knowledge of the pork or food industry. 
  • Advanced mathematical, quantitative, and analytical skills. 
  • Understands system capabilities and finds ways to improve system performance. 
  • Capability to synthesize data from multiple resources to build actionable recommendations. 
  • Effective critical thinking, decision making, and problem-solving skills. 
  • Economic and math skills, and the ability to analyze information and data. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills. 
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment. 
  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment. 
  • Ability to manage a team and hold accountable to details
  • Must be self-motivated with a high degree of attention to detail


Qualifications

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following (Please note: This in no way states or implies that these are the only duties you will be required to perform.   1. Plans and organizes the key initiatives related to the procurement function across the department. 
  2. Builds action plans with achievable timelines. 
  3. Develops and maintains hog procurement reporting to include daily, weekly, and monthly reports. 
  4. Ability to utilize data and transpose it into action items that can be executed by the Hog Procurement team.
  5. Plans and manages team goals, project schedules, and new information. 
  6. Communicates with the Hog Procurement leadership team to identify project objectives and status. 
  7. Utilizes technology to demonstrate where opportunities exist to improve business. 
  8. Monitors and tracks budgets and plans. 
  9. Manages and promotes regulatory compliance requirements to employees and supplies. 
  10. Plays an active role in the preparation of contracts, bids, proposals, and vendor agreements. 
  11. Responsible for monitoring and ensuring agreed upon obligations are met between the Company and suppliers. 
  12. Understands and interprets markets and establishes excellent business relationships with producers to support the procurement of hogs with suppliers. 
  13. Additional duties as assigned.


Supervisory Responsibilities  

Supervises employees in the office to ensure quality service in accordance with the Personnel Manual and applicable laws. Responsibilities include but are not limited: 

  1. Determining staffing requirements necessary to meet the department’s needs.
  2. Recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and training employees in performance of duties in compliance with all state and federal standards and laws as well as company requirements.
  3. Appraising performance, rewarding, and disciplining employees including terminations. 
  4. Addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  5. Planning and directing work schedules to assign and coordinate the work of office employees to promote efficiency of operations and in accordance with budgeted hours, ensuring that all duties are performed – work assignments to assist staff in completing and performing such tasks.
  6. Delegating administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability to as deemed necessary. 
  7. Monitoring turnover rates, employee surveys, and grievances to identify and address trends and/or critical indicators. 
  8. Ensure all necessary trainings (training, animal welfare, policy) are completed in timely manner . 


Language Skills

Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the language of the majority cultural group in order to communicate effectively. Must be able to hear enough to understand those individuals as well. Ability to read, interpret, and comprehend documents such as grafts/flow sheets, financials, general professional articles and publications, governmental regulations, safety rules, assignment sheets, and procedure manuals. Must be able to write reports, business correspondence, policies and procedures, and other administrative forms as outlined above. 


Must be able to effectively communicate in both individual and group settings. Must be able to present information and respond to questions from individuals and/or groups. 


Mathematical Skills 

In order to perform duties, must be able to:

  1. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure such as whole numbers, fractions, percentages, and fractions. 
  2. Compute rate, discounts, ratios, and percent.


Reasoning Ability  

Ability to apply common sense and judgment in solving problems and interpreting and understanding instructions furnished in written or oral form. Must be able to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action yet reason when to involve supervisor. 

 

Computer Skills  

Moderate computer knowledge with the ability to learn software. 


Other Skills and Abilities 

  1. Display strong organizational skills with ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deal with frequent interruptions.
  2. Basic office skills such as phone skills, voice mail, copying, faxing, typing, and directing visitors.
  3. Ability to function independently given assigned duties. 
  4. Ability to communicate, work, and interact with a variety of individuals
  5. Ability to motivate, train and coach employees to encourage optimum performance and engagement.
  6. Ability to solve problems associated with high level issues.
  7. Must be approachable, team oriented, and the ability to foster a positive working environment.


Physical Demands

The employee must frequently lift/carry/move up to 15 pounds and occasionally up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
