As a Diesel Technician, you will inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel-powered trucks, vehicles, and related equipment while producing accurate documentation, completing approved work efficiently, and protecting the quality standards Whitty's Diesel has built over the past fifteen years.

You will work closely with the Shop Foreman, General Manager, Service Advisor, other Diesel Mechanics, Shop Helper/Apprentice, Bookkeeper/Receptionist, vendors, and customers as needed to deliver dependable repairs, minimize customer downtime, and maintain a clean, safe, professional shop.

The Role: Diagnosing, Repairing, and Delivering Quality Work

The Diesel Technician is responsible for performing safe, accurate, timely diagnostic, maintenance, and repair work on diesel trucks, vehicles, and related equipment. This position follows repair orders, manufacturer guidance, shop procedures, and safety requirements; identifies additional repair needs promptly; records work and findings completely; and ensures each assigned job is ready for quality control and customer delivery.

The Diesel Technician is expected to work productively and independently within his or her skill level while seeking assistance from the Shop Foreman on complex diagnostics, safety-sensitive repairs, unclear repair conditions, or work that may exceed the approved scope or estimated time.

Key Responsibilities

• Review assigned repair orders, customer concerns, technician notes, and repair history before beginning work; clarify questions with the Shop Foreman or Service Advisor as needed.
• Perform vehicle inspections, preventive maintenance, scheduled services, and multi-point inspections according to company procedures, manufacturer recommendations, and customer-approved scope of work.
• Diagnose mechanical, electrical, electronic, fuel-system, cooling-system, engine, driveline, transmission, brake, suspension, steering, HVAC, emissions, and aftertreatment concerns within assigned skill level.
• Use diagnostic software, scan tools, wiring diagrams, service information, test equipment, measuring tools, and manufacturer procedures to identify root causes accurately.
• Repair or replace parts and components safely and correctly, including engines, turbochargers, fuel systems, cooling systems, electrical systems, batteries, starters, alternators, brakes, suspension, steering, driveline, transmission, exhaust, and aftertreatment components as applicable.
• Perform required road tests, functional tests, leak checks, and verification procedures to confirm that repairs address the documented concern and that the vehicle is safe for release.
• Identify additional needed repairs, safety concerns, maintenance needs, parts requirements, and changes in scope promptly; document findings clearly and communicate them to the Shop Foreman or Service Advisor before completing unapproved work.
• Record labor time accurately and contemporaneously on each repair order; document diagnostic steps, test results, measurements, parts installed, repair procedures, inspection results, and final verification in sufficient detail to support customer communication, billing, and warranty requirements.
• Maintain a clear status on each assigned job, including work completed, work remaining, parts status, authorization needs, obstacles, and expected completion time.
• Notify the Shop Foreman promptly when a job is blocked by missing parts, additional damage, safety concerns, unclear instructions, special-tool needs, or time requirements that differ materially from the repair plan.
• Protect customer vehicles and property by using seat covers, fender covers, floor protection, appropriate handling procedures, and secure storage practices.
• Maintain assigned tools, shop equipment, diagnostic equipment, and work area in a safe, clean, organized, and ready-to-use condition; report damaged, missing, or unsafe equipment immediately.
• Follow all company safety procedures, PPE requirements, lockout/tagout practices where applicable, chemical-handling instructions, waste-disposal requirements, and housekeeping standards.
• Assist the Shop Foreman with quality-control checks, rework investigation, customer concerns, technical troubleshooting, and training of Shop Helpers or Apprentices when requested.
• Participate in shop huddles, technical training, manufacturer training, safety meetings, and performance-development discussions.
• Support teammates during high-volume periods while maintaining personal accountability for assigned work, documentation, quality, and safety.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required; technical-school training, vocational education, manufacturer training, or equivalent diesel-repair work experience preferred.
• Two or more years of diesel, heavy-duty truck, fleet, equipment, automotive, or related mechanical repair experience preferred; consideration may be given to an entry-level technician with demonstrated mechanical aptitude and a willingness to train.
• Working knowledge of diesel engines, fuel systems, cooling systems, electrical and electronic systems, brakes, steering, suspension, driveline, transmission, HVAC, exhaust, and emissions/aftertreatment systems appropriate to experience level.
• Ability to conduct organized diagnostics; read and interpret repair orders, wiring diagrams, service manuals, specifications, technical bulletins, and diagnostic information.
• Ability to use hand tools, power tools, lifting equipment, diagnostic scanners, test equipment, and shop equipment safely and properly.
• ASE, OEM, manufacturer, electrical, diagnostic, diesel-engine, medium/heavy-truck, or emissions/aftertreatment certifications are preferred; willingness to pursue training and certifications is required.
• Ability to use shop-management software, electronic timekeeping, digital inspection tools, email, and basic computer applications.
• Strong attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, organization, troubleshooting ability, time management, and commitment to quality workmanship.
• Ability to communicate repair findings clearly and professionally with the Shop Foreman, Service Advisor, teammates, vendors, and customers when needed.
• Must provide and maintain a suitable basic set of personal technician tools, subject to company policy; the company will provide required shop-owned specialty tools and equipment.
• Must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record; CDL preferred.
• Must be able to safely perform the physical requirements of the position, including standing, walking, bending, reaching, climbing, lifting, pushing, pulling, working around vehicles and equipment, and working in a shop environment with noise, heat, fumes, and varying weather conditions.
