What are the responsibilities and job description for the Plant Electrician position at Whittemore Company?
Full/Part-Time Master Electrician
Whittemore Company Inc. — Lawrence, MA | On-Site | 16–40 hrs/week
About the Role
The maintenance team at Whittemore is looking for a licensed Master Electrician to support ongoing electrical projects at our perlite and vermiculite processing facility. Hours are flexible — we're looking for someone who can work around their own schedule while helping us tackle a steady backlog of electrical work. Projects include running new 480V circuits, cleaning up and organizing legacy electrical systems, and building PLC control panels and enclosures. As a Master Electrician you'll be able to pull permits and work independently, making you the point person for all things electrical on site. If you take pride in doing clean, code-compliant work and want flexible hours in a dynamic industrial environment, we'd love to talk.
Responsibilities
- Install, run, and terminate new 480V wiring, conduit, and associated distribution equipment throughout the facility
- Pull all required electrical permits for new work
- Audit, reorganize, and clean up legacy electrical systems, including decommissioning obsolete equipment and bringing existing installations up to code
- Build, wire, and label PLC control cabinets and enclosures to print and NEC standards
- Troubleshoot electrical faults across motors, drives, control circuits, and power distribution systems
- Read and work from electrical schematics, panel schedules, and one-line diagrams
- Coordinate with the maintenance team to schedule work around production
- Ensure all work complies with the Massachusetts Electrical Code (527 CMR 12.00) and applicable OSHA standards
- Maintain accurate as-built documentation and panel labels
Requirements
- Valid Massachusetts Master Electrician (Class A) license required
- Demonstrated experience with 480V 3-phase systems in an industrial or manufacturing setting
- Ability to build and wire control panels and enclosures from scratch
- Solid understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC)
- Comfortable working independently, managing your own projects, and pulling permits
- Able to read and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
- Ability to bend and lift up to 50 lbs
- Must wear Personal Protective Equipment as required by applicable health and safety laws
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with PLC platforms (Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens, Automation Direct, or similar)
- Familiarity with VFDs (variable frequency drives) and motor controls
- Prior work in a heavy industrial, mining, or mineral processing environment
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
- Experience with lockout/tagout (LOTO) programs
What We Offer
- Competitive hourly wage commensurate with experience
- 16–40 hours per week with highly flexible scheduling
- Variety of meaningful project work — no two days are the same
