The Geology Department and Environmental Studies Program at Whitman College are seeking candidates for a one-year position with expertise in geology and environmental studies, at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor, beginning August 2026. A Ph.D. is preferred upon starting the position. ABD candidates will be considered.

The successful candidate will teach courses in geology including Environmental Geology and Geomorphology. The candidate will also teach Introduction to Environmental Studies for the Environmental Studies program. This interdisciplinary course is the foundation of the Environmental Studies major and emphasizes a global approach to the environment. The teaching load is equivalent to five courses in the academic year.

Whitman is one of the founding institutions of the Keck Geology Consortium, and the geology department distinguishes itself in its emphasis on experiential learning. The department invites applicants who will participate in the department's twice-yearly Regional Geology class, a 4-day field trip to areas in the geologically active Pacific Northwest. All geology faculty and students can participate in this field experience, which develops students' science identity and creates social cohesion and connections between students, staff, and faculty.

Salary Range: $65,000-$70,000
