PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to supervise the team of mechanics working at the Whitfield County Public Works Department. Under general supervision, the Mechanic Supervisor supervises, coordinates, and participates in the maintenance and repair of the county’s vehicle and equipment fleet, including light-medium-and heavy- duty vehicles, specialized equipment, and emergency response units. Ensures compliance with preventative maintenance schedules, safety regulations, and environmental standards. Provides technical direction to mechanics and support staff and assists with budget, procurement, and recordkeeping functions. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Supervises and oversees staff in his division; plans, coordinates, and directs work activities; assigns and reviews work; maintains work standards.
Plans, assigns, supervises, and evaluates the work of mechanics, technicians, and service personnel.
Participates in diagnosis and repair of complex mechanic, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
Oversees preventative maintenance programs and schedules for all county vehicles and equipment.
Ensures compliance with OSHA, DOT, and EPA standards and county safety policies.
Orders and maintains parts and supplies: coordinates with vendors and contractors.
Maintains computerized maintenance records and prepares activity and cost reports.
Trains staff in proper repair procedures, safety practices, and use of diagnostic equipment.
Assists in budget preparation and monitors expenditures.
Monitors workplace safety; assures safe work area; investigates all accidents.
Assists in monitoring inventory levels of equipment, tools, and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates request for new or replacement materials; tools, and equipment.
Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, or other documents; maintains time records for personnel.
Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Attends and/or conducts staff and safety meetings.
Serves on call at all times for equipment emergencies.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Operates a pickup truck or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
As needed, inspects, performs preventive maintenance and services a variety of gas, diesel, hydraulic and electrical equipment and vehicles; uses a variety of testing procedures and equipment to diagnose problems; replaces, repairs and/or rebuilds defective or worn parts and systems to restore vehicles and equipment to good working condition. Work ranges from preventive maintenance to overhauling vehicle and equipment parts and systems including engines, transmissions, brakes, tires, electric and hydraulic parts, exhaust systems, etc.
Attends safety meetings.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Operates an adding machine, telephone, radio, drill press, welder, band saw, grinders, hand and air tools, chain saws, diagnostic tools, shovels, mechanic’s tools, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

High school diploma or GED; six (6) years of increasingly responsible experience in vehicle and equipment maintenance, including at least two years in lead or supervisory role; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.
