PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to perform intermediate protective service work investigating criminal activity in the County, involving investigating crimes and complaints, apprehending suspects and criminals, gathering and preserving evidence, and presenting evidence and testimony in court.

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Conducts investigations in criminal cases as assigned and/or initiates cases on own as appropriate.

Reviews and analyzes all previous reports prepared in the preliminary phase of a criminal investigation; conducts additional interviews and interrogations; arranges polygraph examinations; reviews departmental records; seeks additional information from uniformed deputies, informants, citizens, witnesses, etc.; reviews results of laboratory examinations; arranges for dissemination of information as appropriate.

Plans, organizes, and conducts searches; arranges for and conducts surveillance; collects and preserves physical evidence; determines involvement of suspects in other crimes; identifies suspects’ criminal histories; identifies and arrests suspects; develops and provides line-ups.

Obtains information on persons or property involved in a crime from witnesses, victims, or others with knowledge of the incident; conducts video-taped interviews at child advocacy center with victims and witnesses; interviews persons and uses departmental records to assist in criminal investigations.

Assists the District Attorney in the preparation of criminal cases for trial; keeps current with new case laws and court decisions that may effect the outcome of cases; reviews all documents, papers, and notes related to an investigation to allow for knowledgeable courtroom testimony; provides depositions to the court on incidents where they have direct knowledge or information.

Secures crime scenes; gathers information in criminal investigations by interviewing victims, witnesses, informants and suspects; performs searches of people, vehicles and buildings; takes and files photographs; takes detailed confessions; prepares investigative reports of findings, facts, and related information; makes arrests and processes arrested suspects; detects and collects evidence and substances that provide the basis for probable cause for criminal acts; seizes or confiscates illegal substances or apparatus, such as drugs, drug equipment, or gambling devices; places and secures seized or confiscated items into property control; maintains the chain of custody of all evidence in accordance with current search and seizure laws and departmental policy.

Monitors radio calls; communicates with radio dispatcher and responds to complaints, reports of criminal events, requests for law enforcement, and domestic or public disputes; inspects troublesome areas and checks security of business establishments; conducts stop and frisk searches on suspicious persons.

Patrols and conducts surveillance in problem areas.

Obtains arrest warrants; arrests, searches, and secures wanted persons; advises victims or other involved persons of their rights according to current law and the proper procedures to follow to prosecute a case; speaks with and refers citizens in need to appropriate public and social services.

Completes and/or reviews paperwork documenting shift activities, offenses and accidents, victim and suspect statements, and other related information; completes State report documents to accurately record criminal offenses; prepares incident reports, arrest reports, and lab and property sheets; organizes and files records.

Assists other law enforcement personnel and agencies.

Engages in public relations and community service activities and events to promote a positive image for the Department and to build cooperative and collaborative relationships with the community; provides crime prevention/safety services to the community.

Attends roll call; attends in-service and specialized training; attends meetings.
Cleans and inspects all issued equipment, to include uniforms, web gear, hand gun, ammunition, magazines, hand cuffs, flashlight, hats, badges, shoes, pursuit case, and other equipment; inspects assigned patrol vehicle prior to beginning shift; operates assigned vehicle and equipment in accordance with all laws and regulations of the State of Georgia and the Department.

Enters data into or retrieves data from the Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) and the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) systems; locates wanted persons through records, telephone, teletype, and field checks; maintains and updates intelligence and specialized files.

Performs and conducts investigations on drug laboratories; assists in dismantling labs and hazardous material cleanup; provides security for hazardous materials team; handles infectious evidence; investigates prescription fraud.

Operates a computer terminal, vehicle, firearms, law enforcement equipment, office equipment, video equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.

Performs other related duties as required.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED; three years of experience in law enforcement; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license. Must successfully complete the State of Georgia, Basic Mandate Training and Basic Detective Mandate. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Peace Officer certification.PERFORMANCE APTITUDES

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; may include ability to perform mathematical operations with fractions; may include ability to compute discount, interest, profit and loss, ration and proportion; may include ability to calculate surface areas, volumes, weights, and measures.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems; to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable.
