Position OverviewWe are seeking a LiDAR Sensor Operator to support helicopter-based LiDAR data acquisition across the United States and Canada. This is a full-time position based in Newport, VT.
The role includes approximately 50% travel for field operations, with the remainder of time spent working from our Newport office supporting equipment preparation, data management, and coordination with processing teams. This is not a remote position.
You will operate RIEGL topographic LiDAR systems, ensure data integrity in real time, and collaborate closely with pilots, field crews, and data processing teams to deliver high-quality geospatial outputs.
Key Responsibilities- Operate and monitor LiDAR sensors during helicopter flight missions
- Execute pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight system checks and calibrations
- Ensure accurate, complete data capture aligned with project specifications
- Coordinate with pilots and field teams to optimize flight plans and mission efficiency
- Troubleshoot LiDAR, GNSS/IMU, and onboard data systems in real time
- Manage data offload, storage, and initial quality control after missions
- Maintain detailed acquisition logs, system reports, and documentation
- Support installation, configuration, and maintenance of airborne sensor systems
- Assist with office-based tasks including equipment prep, data organization, and workflow coordination
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Geomatics, Geography, Surveying, Engineering, Aviation Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Experience operating LiDAR or airborne geospatial data acquisition systems
- Strong technical proficiency with LiDAR acquisition and monitoring software
- Working knowledge of airborne survey operations and aviation safety standards
- Proven troubleshooting ability in fast-paced field environments
- Strong communication and coordination skills across technical teams
- Ability to travel approximately 50% for field deployments
- Experience with RIEGL LiDAR systems (topographic strongly preferred)
- Hands-on experience installing or configuring sensors on aircraft mounting systems
- Background in helicopter-based survey operations or aviation environments
- Familiarity with GNSS/IMU integration and trajectory workflows
- Exposure to LiDAR data processing, QA/QC, or strip alignment workflows
- Combination of field deployments (helicopter-based) and in-office work in Newport, VT
