Position Summary:
The Field Mechanic Supervisor is a critical leadership role within the Equipment Department, responsible for overseeing the maintenance and repair of a diverse fleet of construction equipment. This includes heavy machinery such as excavators, loaders, dozers, haul trucks, and support vehicles. The supervisor ensures that all fleet assets are maintained to the highest safety and performance standards while effectively managing a team of mechanics in a fast-paced, field-oriented environment.

Whitaker Construction, founded in 1953, has over 67 years of experience in the heavy civil and underground utility construction industry. Whitaker, an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) company, has become one of the largest contractors in the intermountain area with more than 400 employees and nearly 50 crews. We perform sanitary sewer, storm drain, culinary water, irrigation, earthwork, roadway construction, dams, landfills, natural gas pipelines, industrial piping, and telecommunication projects primarily in Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Colorado, and Oregon.

Core Responsibilities:

• Team Supervision: Direct the daily activities of shop and field mechanics, ensuring work is performed efficiently, safely, and in compliance with company and industry standards.
• Fleet Maintenance Oversight: Coordinate preventative maintenance and repairs for construction equipment to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
• Quality Control: Inspect completed work to ensure repairs meet OEM standards and regulatory safety requirements.
• Training & Development: Train and mentor mechanics on diagnostic tools, repair procedures, and equipment-specific systems to improve technical capabilities.
• Work Scheduling & Dispatch: Plan mechanic assignments and coordinate with project teams to prioritize urgent equipment needs across job sites.
• Parts & Inventory Management: Monitor and manage inventory of parts, fluids, and tools; coordinate with vendors to ensure timely availability of critical supplies.
• Performance Management: Conduct routine evaluations, provide feedback, and address performance issues to support team growth and accountability.
• Troubleshooting & Field Support: Serve as a technical resource for resolving complex mechanical problems in both shop and field environments.
• Compliance & Safety: Enforce adherence to safety protocols, environmental regulations, and company policies.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

Essential Skills

• In-depth mechanical knowledge of heavy construction equipment, hydraulics, diesel engines, electrical systems, and diagnostic software.
• Strong leadership and team coordination skills, especially in dynamic field conditions.
• Clear and effective communication with crews, supervisors, and equipment managers.
• Proven ability to troubleshoot equipment issues under time constraints.
• Excellent organizational skills for managing multiple priorities and work orders.

Preferred Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certifications or vocational training in diesel/heavy equipment repair preferred.
• Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience with construction fleet maintenance, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
• Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred); ability to travel to job sites as needed.
• Certifications such as ASE, OSHA 30, or manufacturer-specific training (e.g., CAT, John Deere, Komatsu) are a plus.

Salary : $75,000 - $90,000
