What are the responsibilities and job description for the Garden Center Associate position at Whispering Pines Nursery and Garden Center?
Position Overview:
This position focuses on maintaining our outdoor nursery areas, caring for plant inventory, assisting customers in the yard, and supporting daily operations. The ideal Associate enjoys working outdoors in all weather conditions and takes pride in keeping a clean, organized, and welcoming environment. This hybrid role involves operating the cash register, assisting customers with purchases and inquiries, and supporting daily tasks such as stocking, plant care, general upkeep of our garden center, and other tasks.
Plant & Yard Maintenance:
- Water, prune, fertilize, and care for trees, shrubs, perennials, and seasonal plants.
- Monitor plant health and report any concerns to management.
- Maintain clean, organized, and well-stocked outdoor displays.
- Rotate and consolidate plant inventory as needed.
- Assist with seasonal transitions and display setups.
- Keep walkways, greenhouse areas, and yard spaces safe and free of debris.
Inventory & Operations Support:
- Unload trucks and assist with checking in plant and product deliveries.
- Move plant material and hard goods using carts or equipment.
- Load customer purchases safely and efficiently.
- Assist with organizing back-stock and storage areas.
- Support overall daily operations as assigned by management.
Customer Assistance:
- Greet customers in the yard and provide basic plant guidance.
- Help customers locate products and load materials.
- Deliver friendly, helpful service that reflects our commitment to customer satisfaction.
- Support product sales by confidently assisting customers with outdoor plant selections.
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness in all customer-facing areas.
- Successfully selling products and services to customers.
- Perform additional duties and tasks as assigned by management to support team and company success.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience in retail, cashiering, or garden center work is a plus, but not required.
- Basic knowledge of plants, gardening, or a willingness to learn.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time and lift up to 40 lbs.
- Flexible availability, including weekends and holidays.
