Wheeling University is seeking a Dean of Students starting in June of 2026. The Dean of Students is responsible for fostering a campus culture that upholds the values and principles of the Catholic faith while ensuring a safe and respectful environment for all members of the university community. The Dean of Students plays a crucial role in promoting ethical behavior, enforcing university policies and social conduct standards as outlined in the Wheeling University handbook and leads parent and family outreach for the division of Student Affairs.

This position reports to the Chief of Staff and Wheeling University President

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership for student life, student conduct, and student support services, fostering a safe, mission-centered campus community aligned with the university’s Catholic identity.
  • Lead and coordinate institutional response to student crises, behavioral concerns, and critical incidents as a member of the Campus Safety Team, ensuring appropriate documentation, follow-up, and compliance with applicable laws.
  • Oversees all aspects of the student conduct process, including policy development and interpretation, case management, hearings, appeals, restorative practices, and equitable resolution of cases.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations related to student conduct and student welfare, including collaboration with the Title IX Coordinator and other compliance officers.
  • Supervise and support staff within the Dean of Students area; provide training to university personnel on conduct procedures, crisis response, and student support best practices.
  • Utilize conduct data and student trends to inform prevention programming, retention strategies, and continuous improvement efforts; prepare reports as needed for institutional leadership.
  • Collaborate with Academic Affairs, Athletics, Residence Life, Counseling Services, Campus Security, Campus Ministry, Human Resources and other departments to promote student success, persistence, and holistic development.
  • Provide care, advocacy, and referrals for students experiencing academic, personal, social, or financial challenges, while serving as a resource for families and upholding FERPA guidelines.
  • Develop and oversee family engagement initiatives, including Parent Weekend and Little Sibs Weekend.
  • Promote ethical awareness, restorative practices, and Catholic values through student programming, policy alignment, and partnership with Campus Ministry and university leadership.
  • Serve on university committees and contribute to institutional strategic planning related to student engagement and campus climate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support departmental and institutional needs.
Qualifications:
  • A master's degree in a relevant field such as higher education administration, counseling, law, or ethics
  • Experience working in higher education or educational work setting is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in student conduct administration, conflict resolution, or a related area within a university setting
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Catholic teachings, values, and traditions.
  • Strong communication, mediation, and interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on empathy and active listening.
  • Familiarity with legal issues related to higher education, Title IX, and other relevant regulations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive matters with discretion and compassion.
  • Demonstrated excellence with interpersonal, written and verbal communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a wide variety of campus and community constituencies
  • Flexibility with work schedule as some evening and weekend programming will be required
  • Professional demeanor and ability to interact with charity towards students, staff and faculty.
