MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
- Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse, completion of a Surgical Technology program, completion of a Registered Nurse program,
OR High School Diploma or Equivalent and two (2) years of previous scrub experience.
- Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
- Two years of Surgical Technology experience in a tertiary setting.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Advanced knowledge in desired specialty strongly preferred.
- Provide support to medical staff to assure patients' needs are met and to assure efficient operation of outpatient unit.
- Utilizes quality aseptic technique when working in an unsterile or sterile Role in the Procedure Room.
- Assist the Coordinator/Preceptor in monitoring technique of all persons in the Orthopaedic Procedure room to maintain a sterile field.
- Assists in gowning and gloving surgeons and positioning equipment and instruments.
- Passes sterile instruments to the surgical team during a surgical procedure.
- Assists in the transportation and positioning of patients.
- Serves as a mentor.
- Obtains all necessary supplies, suture, instrumentation and equipment for a procedure independently, Independently sets up the sterile field
- Anticipates what surgical complications can occur and have appropriate instrumentation and equipment available.
- Maintains an accurate list of physician preferences.
- Assist the manager in any acquisitions of capital equipment and product trials.
- Participates in unit based education activities and may participate in presenting in-services for the staff.
- Schedules additional ancillary testing as needed. Assists providers when possible in completing requisitions or forms for patient examination or testing.
- Act as chaperone during medical examinations.
- Ensure medical records and test results are available for visit, including those from referring physicians. Inspect/review medical records to maintain correct order and completeness.
- Monitors nurse call system and relays information to appropriate staff. Answers telephone calls and transmits information to appropriate staff.
- Provides assistance and information to patients, families, and visitors as instructed by the physician.
- Participates in Quality Assurance Program to assure quality patient services are provided.
- Performs equipment checks as assigned.
- Assists with the general cleaning duties of the department
- Monitors inventory; orders; and restocks supplies, instruments, and equipment
- Assists with the sterilization and maintenance of sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment
- Prepares supplies and equipment for surgical procedure following physician preference
- Removes out of date items and discards or reprocesses following established guidelines.
- Assists with clerical work, and record keeping duties including the gathering of quality indicator data such as frequency of events. Assists with the updating of preference cards.
- Prepares and updates preferences of providers and instrument tray lists as directed
- May schedule and coordinate new and return appointments using computerized system according to WVU Medicine outpatient clinic policy and procedures. Schedule and coordinate diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures.
- May assure registration of patients. Collect vital information for purposes of patient identification and billing purposes and enter data into computer. Obtain charts and fee sheets necessary for patient visits. Obtain signatures from release of information and consent to treatment.
- Assists with proper recording of patient charges
- May process and mail letters to patients.
- Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying of materials and equipment weighing 40 lbs.
- Must be able position and/or lift patients, and stand or walk 4 to 12 hours per day.
- Possess visual, hearing and oral acuity along with manual dexterity and technical ability
- Work is performed in a normal clinical outpatient environment.
- Position is frequently exposed to biohazards, as well as communicable disease.
- Position requires ability to respond quickly to varying demands from provider and patient.
