Position Summary:
The Director of Volunteer Services oversees the Volunteer Ministry of Wheeler Mission by leading a team of paid staff, managing all volunteer policies and processes, including the volunteer life cycle of recruitment, selection, onboarding/training, appreciation/recognition, evaluation, promotion, and exit. This position ensures the needs for volunteers are being met by working with the Volunteer Ministry Team and other key Staff. The Director of Volunteer Services is an advocate for meaningful volunteer engagement and best practices. This position also oversees the use of, training, and functionality of our volunteer management system and database.

Key Area: Volunteer Services Leadership
- Provide strategic oversight of the Volunteer Life Cycle, including recruitment, selection, onboarding, training, recognition, evaluation, promotion, and exit across all WM locations.
- Serve as the organization’s subject matter expert on volunteer engagement, promoting best practices, and identifying opportunities to strengthen volunteer involvement.
- Ensure Volunteer Services policies, procedures, and handbooks remain current, effective, and consistently implemented across the organization.
- Develop and maintain resources, tools, and documentation that support Volunteer Services initiatives and enhance the volunteer experience.
Key Area: Volunteer Operations and Administration
- Oversee the administration, maintenance, and reporting of the Volunteer Management System, ensuring accurate records and effective system utilization.
- Train and support Volunteer Services staff and Wheeler Mission employees in the effective use of volunteer management systems and related processes.
- Maintain open communication with volunteer supervisors across all ministry locations to identify needs, resolve issues, and ensure consistent volunteer support.
- Manage the Volunteer Services budget, exercising sound stewardship of resources while ensuring the ministry is adequately supported.
Key Area: Leadership, Collaboration, and Community Engagement
- Provide leadership, coaching, and supervision to the Volunteer Engagement Managers, fostering accountability, collaboration, and professional growth.
- Build strong partnerships with Wheeler Mission leadership to ensure volunteer efforts align with ministry priorities and organizational needs.
- Represent Wheeler Mission to prospective volunteers, community organizations, and external stakeholders through speaking engagements, tours, interviews, and relationship-building activities.
- Participate in Development, Leadership, and other organizational meetings and trainings to support ministry alignment and organizational effectiveness.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
This position provides supervision and guidance to the Volunteer Engagement Managers within the Volunteer Department, while also overseeing the activities and contributions of all volunteers involved at Wheeler Mission.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
To perform the essential job functions of this position, a candidate must be capable of performing many physical functions including:
- Work in an office setting but will have regular opportunities for tours, speaking engagements, off-site meetings, and special events.
- The occasional need to set up and facilitate work projects, give tours using the stairwell, lifting boxes, tables, chairs, and other items up to 20 pounds.
Other Requirements for Employment
- This is a full-time, 40-hour per week position, generally with some flexibility working, 9AM to 5PM. Occasional evening or weekend overtime work is required as job duties demand. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule and some holidays and weekends.
- Must possess a valid state issued driver’s license and have a driving record without major moving violations, including convictions for DUI, Reckless Driving, or Driving While Suspended. Must be insurable according to standards established by Wheeler Mission’s risk management insurance agency.
