The Wheelchair Foundation is a nonprofit organization leading an international effort to create awareness of the needs and abilities of people with physical disabilities, to promote the joy of giving, create global friendship and to deliver a wheelchair to every child, teen and adult in the world who needs one, but cannot afford one. For these people, the Wheelchair Foundation delivers Hope, Mobility and Independence.
Position Summary
As our Director of Community Outreach, you will be the driving force behind promoting the From the Heart (FTH) Program throughout the Bay Area. You’ll work closely with community leaders, educators and K–12 students to raise awareness, inspire empathy and encourage action. You will also be responsible for increasing community visibility and cultivating lasting donor relationships within the broader community.
We are looking for a self-motivated, energetic leader who thrives in environments where they can take initiative, be creative and inspire others. You must be comfortable working independently while also building strong relationships with schools and community organizations. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys being a self-starter, finding new opportunities and bringing fresh ideas to the table.
You will facilitate school presentations and assemblies, manage communications and work to expand fundraising opportunities both within the schools and the broader community. Another key role will be to coordinate and lead an annual international wheelchair distribution trip.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Initiate and conduct meetings with school district superintendents, principals and teachers to recruit participation in the FTH program.
- Create, plan and lead engaging assemblies, classroom presentations and meetings with school leadership, educators and students.
- Develop marketing strategies and materials, including regular digital newsletters.
- Organize and provide campaign materials; collect fundraising proceeds from schools as needed.
- Reserve and coordinate delivery of wheelchairs.
- Publicize and organize the international wheelchair distribution trip, including travel logistics and coordination with in-country partners.
- Build and grow the program's social media presence to engage schools, donors and the broader community.
- Take initiative to research and pursue new opportunities for education, fundraising and community visibility.
- Interact with all organizational levels and communicate effectively in person, via phone and in writing.
- Coordinate with Director of Marketing on shared projects.
From the Heart Program Objectives
- Raise awareness about the global need for mobility.
- Educate and sensitize students and educators about the challenges faced by individuals with physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities.
- Raise funds to provide wheelchairs to those in need.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university.
- Background in Teaching, Development, Fundraising, Marketing, Community Outreach, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- Highly self-motivated with the ability to work independently with little oversight and manage multiple projects.
- Strong organizational, presentation and project management skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; knowledge of grammar, spelling and professional formats.
- Dynamic speaker—comfortable with both large group presentations and one-on-one interactions.
- Confident in approaching and recruiting new schools, districts, community groups and individuals.
- Creative thinker who enjoys motivating others and bringing new ideas forward.
- Social media savvy; able to grow an online presence and drive engagement.
- Prior experience working with nonprofit organizations or disability communities is a plus.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace platforms; capable of creating video clips and using slide presentation tools such as Google Slides.
Additional Information
- 4 days per week (32 hours total)
- Hybrid remote position with required in-office hours at our Danville location.
- Flexible hours depending on school schedules and program needs.
- Reports directly to the President of the Wheelchair Foundation.
