Position Overview
The Controller is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing all accounting functions of the company, including financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance. This position works closely with management, external vendors (bank, auditors), and other team members. A secondary responsibility includes oversight of HR processes through HR software, benefit renewals, and enrollments.
A successful candidate will thrive in a small company environment, demonstrate strong leadership, and excel at collaborating across departments to drive process improvements and maintain financial integrity. The role requires someone who can communicate effectively to implement changes and identify concerns.
Responsibilities
- Oversee and communicate with management to establish robust processes and controls ensuring the integrity of the company ledger
- Supervise all financial control activities, including the review and analysis of monthly borrowing base number disclosures
- Provide senior management with accurate, timely, and comprehensive financial information to guide effective strategic analysis and decision-making
- Lead the consolidation and analysis of Custer Companies performance, trends, and enterprise-wide financial metrics
- Manage external audit processes by providing necessary documentation and support to external auditors
- Prepare and coordinate all information needed for the accounting firm to prepare tax returns
- Lead the budgeting, forecasting, and financial projection processes in collaboration with management
- Assist management in the evaluation and selection of insurance products for company assets and employees
- Train, mentor, and develop administrative and accounting employees to achieve needed skills
- Ensure secure and accurate bank reconciliations and all financial transactions
- Oversee all payroll tax reporting, compliance, and distribution of year-end forms
- Supervise day-to-day accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll execution as needed
Experience, Skills, Abilities
- Significant previous accounting experience, preferably in the grain or agricultural industry
- Strong understanding of accounting systems at an organizational level and the implications of changing procedures
- Proven leadership ability with a track record of collaborating effectively with others in a positive and efficient manner
- Experience working as a team player and helping others learn processes
- Strong desire for optimization through individual and group processes and with technology
- Excellent communication skills, particularly in providing detailed information to management
- High adaptability to change and ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment
- Demonstrated experience as a team player with a track record of mentoring and developing staff
