Whatcom Intergenerational High School is seeking a compassionate, professional, and student-centered 0.5 FTE Student Support Paraeducator to join our school community. The ideal candidate enjoys working with teenagers, builds strong relationships while maintaining clear professional boundaries, and is committed to helping every student feel valued, capable, and supported.
Qualifications & Characteristics
- Works well with teens and demonstrates patience, empathy, and professionalism.
- High school diploma required; college coursework or a college degree preferred.
- Prepared and able to support students in mastering high school ELA, mathematics, and social studies standards.
- Builds strong, positive relationships with students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
- Celebrates and honors racial and cultural diversity, neurodiversity, diverse gender identities, and LGBTQ identities and experiences.
- Is an active listener who seeks to understand students before responding.
- Values collaboration and is willing to co-create group goals, strategies, and solutions with students and staff.
- Is not afraid to ask clarifying questions and seeks support when expectations or situations are unclear.
- Remains calm, flexible, and professional in a fast-paced school environment that requires moving frequently from class to class, subject to subject, and student to student.
Primary Duties
- Push into academic classes to provide additional support to students receiving special education services.
- Help students understand and access academic assignments, concepts, and classroom expectations.
- Support students in navigating social situations, problem-solving, and developing appropriate strategies for success.
- Record and co-monitor student academic, behavioral, and social data in collaboration with the instructional and special education teams.
- Communicate observations and relevant student information with teachers and support staff.
- Supervise and support students during lunch, field trips, and school events.
- Help create an inclusive, respectful, and welcoming school environment where all students can participate and succeed.
- Collaborate with teachers, special education staff, administrators, and students to identify barriers to learning and develop practical strategies for success.
