School Nurse/Student Health & Wellness Specialist
Reports To: Director of Education & Learning
Classification: Part-Time non-exempt; max 15 hours per week; typically one day per week
Salary: $28- $35 per hour DOE

POSITION SUMMARY
School nursing prioritizes students' physical, emotional, and academic health. The school nurse oversees all health services, including managing medical care plans, maintaining accurate records, supporting IEP/504 plans, and promoting daily health and wellness. Additionally, the nurse will foster relationships with students and families through regular communication, organize necessary staff training mandated by the state, and assist with drug and alcohol-related issues.
DUTIES OF POSITION
- Administers basic health care and first aid to provide appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, injured students, staff, and volunteers.
- Responds to medical emergencies to address immediate safety concerns.
- Directs department functions to prioritize project deadlines and ensure optimal time, resources, and personnel utilization.
- Maintains health care plans, medical emergency cards, and immunization records for all site students to ensure compliance with state laws and provide necessary information for intra-district transfer of records when needed.
- Monitors all student medications administered at school as a physician prescribes to ensure compliance with state laws.
- Trains staff on medication administration as applicable.
- Prepares various written materials (e.g., quantity reports, student activities, and correspondence) to document activities, provide written references, and convey information compliant with state laws.
- Collaborates with families, students, health care providers, and other agencies to promote necessary treatment, secure information, and comply with legal requirements.
- Leads the drug and alcohol response committee, offering support for drug, alcohol, and vaping issues to students while communicating with families.
- Conducts programs and activities (e.g., in-service training, hearing, vision, and immunization review) to ensure compliance with government-mandated requirements.
- Monitors students for health-related factors affecting the learning process, communicates with families and primary care providers and provides significant information to modify the student’s individualized education and health plan as applicable.
- Reports suspected child abuse cases to ensure compliance with all related legal requirements.
- Provide all staff annual training on CPR procedures, bloodborne pathogens, & Epipen administration.
- Reports students with contagious diseases to local public health authorities to minimize infection and comply with legal requirements.
- Encourages district students to participate in affordable, comprehensive health coverage programs by offering information about coverage to children from low- to moderate-income working families.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Develop and sustain a comprehensive school health program.
- Strong communication skills; State and local reports as required
- Oversee accurate record maintenance
- Screening procedures for vision, hearing, and scoliosis
- CPS referral process
- Maintained CPR/First Aid/AED Certification
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing and/or additional training
- WA State Educational Staff Associates School Nurse Certificate
- Experience in school nursing or health education
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
- Must complete state and federal criminal background clearance
- Work scheduled hours on campus
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Work scheduled hours in person, but a hybrid schedule may be proposed
- The position may require lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and similar activities as appropriate.
WORK SCHEDULE
The 2026-2027 school year contract will start in late August and conclude on June 30, 2027. The possibility of contract renewal is contingent upon the evaluation by the Director of Education & Learning.
