The Building Inspector position performs specialized inspection tasks related to residential and light commercial building construction projects.
Key duties include:
- Inspection of construction projects, including structural, mechanical and plumbing systems.
- Application and enforcement of adopted codes, including issuing correction notices and stop work orders.
- Answering code related questions from members of the public and providing customer service at the County Permit Center.
- Coordinating with Whatcom County departments with related regulatory responsibilities.

- Associates (AA) degree
- Four years construction experience
- International Code Council (ICC) certification
- One year of inspection experience
- Two years construction experience and two years of related classes.
Building Inspector II: Same as above PLUS one year of experience at a Building Inspector I level AND two International Code Council (ICC) certifications, one of which must be Residential Building Inspector (B1) or Residential Plans Examiner (R3) certification.
Must have a driving record that meets County standards and possess a valid driver's license at time of hire and throughout employment.
Background check must meet County criteria.
At its sole discretion, Whatcom County may consider combinations of education, experience, certifications, and training in lieu of specifically required qualifications contained herein.
Salary Range:
Building Inspector I: MCBA Range 140.0: $29.89 - $43.07 per hour
Anticipated Hiring Range: $29.89 - $32.26 per hour
Building Inspector II: MCBA Range 150.0: $31.14 - $44.86 per hour
Anticipated Hiring Range: $31.14 - $33.62 per hour

This position receives annual pay increases to the next step in the associated salary range (apx. 3.8%) subject to satisfactory performance, in addition to any negotiated Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA).
