Job Description
The Westfield Specialty Intern Program is a paid, ten-week program that offers students the opportunity to obtain firsthand insight into the insurance business. Every day you'll learn and develop your skills but you'll also have a clear and supportive path ahead of you. You'll gain the confidence to take on real projects, build your network and learn from senior leaders across our business. We are seeking Intern candidates to work with our Claims team in our Berkeley Heights, NJ office.

An Claims Intern at Westfield Specialty works on a variety of projects to gain hands-on experience in the insurance industry and develop technical skills.Including:
- Assist with the intake and setup of new claims in internal systems.
- Review loss notices and verify the completeness and accuracy of documentation.
- Organize and maintain digital and physical claim files, ensuring all relevant documents (e.g., legal filings, policy forms, correspondence) are properly stored.
- Assist with gathering and summarizing key claim information (e.g., timelines, policy terms, limits, and exclusions).
- Review and summarize relevant contracts, policies, or legal documents under the guidance of a claims examiner.
- Liaise with underwriters, legal counsel and internal stakeholders to request additional claim-related information.
- Participate in claim review meetings or status calls with claims adjusters, legal teams, and risk managers.
- Learn the end-to-end claims lifecycle in specialty lines, including first notice of loss (FNOL), investigation, coverage determination, litigation, and resolution.
- Observe claim strategies in unique or high-risk areas like cyberattacks, malpractice, or directors & officers liability.
- Attend training sessions to learn about insurance products, policy administration systems, and regulatory requirements.
- Gain exposure to business operations and how they support the overall insurance value chain (underwriting, claims, billing, customer service).
- Shadow professionals across different departments to understand cross-functional operations.
- Currently matriculated student enrolled at a 4 year college or university pursuing either a Bachelors or Masters degree (required)
- Strong GPA preferred (Minimum GPA of 3.2 required)
- Strong interpersonal skills, including strong oral and written communication skills
- Leadership experience through work or involvement in community service, athletics, clubs, or other activities preferred
- Technically adept/digitally savvy
- Ability to be onsite in office 4 days a week
