The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for the complete design and development lifecycle of parts, assemblies, and integrated systems for shelter and mobility projects. This role plays a key part in system design, product development, and engineering analysis by conceptualizing, designing, and optimizing mechanical and electromechanical solutions that meet customer requirements while ensuring manufacturability, reliability, performance, and cost efficiency.
The ideal candidate combines strong technical engineering capability with hands-on problem solving, project management skills, and the ability to collaborate cross-functionally with Production, Supply Chain, Quality, and external vendors. This position is assigned to Western Shelter, a member of the Western Protective Solutions family located in Springfield, Oregon and reports directly to the Engineering Manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop mechanical parts, assemblies, and integrated shelter and mobility systems from concept through production
- Create and maintain 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, bills of materials, and supporting technical documentation
- Perform engineering analysis, including tolerance analysis, structural evaluations, and FEA to validate system performance and reliability
- Translate customer requirements into practical, manufacturable, and cost-effective mechanical and electromechanical design solutions
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and external vendors to support product development, system integration, testing, and continuous improvement initiatives
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) required
- Mechanical design and project management experience preferred
- Experience defining and developing products to meet customer requirements
- Hands-on knowledge with trailers and container-based systems strongly preferred
- Experience with CAD, PDM, and FEA software; SolidWorks preferred
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Smartsheet
- Strong understanding of mechanical system design, manufacturing processes, and engineering best practices
- Some travel may be required (<5%)
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs. without assistance; ability to lift over 50 lbs. with assistance
- Ability to bend and stand for extended periods of time
- Visual acuity to read instructions, operate equipment, and inspect manufactured parts
