What are the responsibilities and job description for the Natural Resource Technician position at Western Piedmont Council of Governments?
The Natural Resources Technician will perform the professional environmental, water and air quality planning, preservation and enhancement work for the COG. This employee will administer some elements of the Phase II stormwater regulations, including maintaining required documentation for compliance; perform professional environmental, water and air quality planning, preservation and enhancement work associated with the Catawba River Basin Water Quality Program for the Greater Hickory Metropolitan area; develop and implemen a comprehensive public education program; evaluate programs and prepare and present reports; provide outreach for the WPCOG’s Stormwater Planning and Administration Program, apply for and administer grants for water quality issues and providing technical assistance to the local government members.
Example of Duties:
- Designs and implements programs to educate contractors, developers, homeowners, and the general public in the principles of erosion control and water quality; develops educational materials and methods to reach target audiences; makes presentations to school groups and civic organizations, leads tours, hosts booths, and prepares media releases and newsletter articles.
- Conducts, coordinates, prepares, presents, and participates in the Western Piedmont Water Resources Committee.
- Researches local, regional, and state watershed and water quality plans, policies, programs, statutes, ordinances, and related.
- Provides technical assistance and advice and makes presentations to COG members’ staff and local elected officials, state officials, boards, business and civic groups, and other members of the public.
- Assist with development and preparation of federal and state grants as appropriate.
- Develops new contract projects as requested and needed.
- Administers the Septic Tank Repair Program
- Develops and implements Outreach Programs for stormwater, water quality, air quality, and other related programs.
- Participates in committees and interest groups regarding storm water management; responds to citizen and other inquiries to provide information.
- Additional job duties will be required as assigned.
Qualifications:
- An associate's degree in environmental studies, engineering, or other related field is required.
- A bachelor's degree in environmental studies, engineering, or other related field is preferred.
- Experience in stormwater management or environmental is preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience is accepted.
