Job Summary

The Student Wellbeing Director provides strategic leadership, administration, and oversight of programs and services that support student mental health, wellness, accessibility, and crisis response. This position supervises counseling staff, manages accommodations and student support services, and ensures compliance with applicable federal, state, and accreditation standards. The Director collaborates across departments and with community partners to promote a campus culture that prioritizes holistic student wellbeing and success. The role also leads prevention education initiatives addressing mental health, interpersonal violence, and substance use.

Administrative:
  • Manage departmental budgets and ensure effective resource allocation.

  • Supervise counselors and other staff, including scheduling, training, and performance oversight.

  • Evaluate student well-being programs and services for continuous quality improvement.

  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, ADA, HLC, and other regulatory or accreditation-related requirements.

  • Serve on Student Life committees and represent Student Life on institutional councils to support holistic student wellbeing and success.

Student Support:

  • Assist students with social service needs, including referrals to internal supports and community-based resources.

  • Coordinate with community partners, social service providers, and support groups to enhance student access to wellness services.

  • Develop and maintain MOUs with relevant agencies as needed.

Accommodation Services:

  • Oversee the full accommodations request, review, and approval process.

  • Attend new student and prospective student events to provide information regarding accommodations and transitions.

Counseling Services:

  • Supervise counseling staff and manage the delivery of short-term counseling services.

  • Serve on the CARE Team and participate in crisis response and intervention.

  • Oversee the re-entry process for students returning from medical or mental health leave.

  • Provide short-term, as-needed counseling support to students.

Education and Program Efforts:

  • Develop and deliver proactive mental health education programs.

  • Provide interpersonal violence prevention programming, including education on consent, healthy relationships, and Title IX–related topics.

  • Support alcohol and drug prevention and education initiatives.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required and Preferred Qualifications

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education:
  • Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or a closely related field required.

Experience:
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in counseling, disability services, student support services, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated experience supervising professional staff and managing departmental budgets.

  • Knowledge of compliance expectations including HIPAA, FERPA, ADA, and HLC requirements.

  • Previous experience in crisis response, threat assessment, or short-term counseling in a higher education or clinical setting preferred.

  • Experience supporting individuals from diverse backgrounds and promoting equitable access to services.

  • Strong communication, leadership, assessment, and organizational skills.

License or Certificate:

  • Current Nebraska licensure as one of the following:
    • Licensed Mental Health Practitioner (LMHP),
    • Licensed Independent Mental Health Practitioner (LIMHP),
    • Or equivalent licensure eligible for independent practice in Nebraska.

  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record that does not exclude the driver from coverage under WNCC’s vehicle insurance required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Work is performed primarily in an indoor, office-based, environmentally controlled setting.

  • Requires the ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods, operate a computer and standard office equipment, and communicate effectively in person and via electronic methods.

  • Occasional travel, walking across campus locations, and light lifting (up to approximately 20 pounds) may be required.

  • Must be able to respond quickly to crisis situations, which may involve high-stress interactions.
