PURPOSE STATEMENT
A Sterile Processing Technician is a professional who assists the surgical team. The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for cleaning, sterilizing, and assembling surgical instruments used in the facility. This role is vital in preventing infection and ensuring the safety of patients and staff.
Essential Functions
- Responsible to maintain infection control and Joint Commission standards in the work area.
- Operate and monitor washers, ultrasonic cleaners, and sterilization equipment.
- Inspect, assemble, and ensure accurate labeling of surgical instrumentation.
- Perform routine quality assurance testing on equipment.
- Maintain accurate records of sterilization process and equipment maintenance.
- Communicate with operating room staff and other departments to ensure timely delivery of needed items.
- Organize inventories and maintain sterile instrument inventory system for assigned services.
- Maintain instruments in appropriate standards and coordinates repairs for surgical services as needed.
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
- Performs other essential duties as assigned.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILL REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Certification through HSPA preferred.
- Completion of Sterile Processing Technician program preferred.
- Current knowledge of AAMI standards and regulations.
- Current BLS or obtain with 6 months of hire.
- Knowledge of surgical instrumentation and equipment.
- Ability to deal with ambiguity.
- Attention to detail, good manual dexterity and strong organizational skills.
- Must be self-motivated and have the ability to work within the established policies, procedures and practices prescribed by the hospital/clinic.
