Description
The Assistant Mechanic supports the Lead Mechanic and the Agronomy Department by performing maintenance, repairs, and adjustments on all golf course equipment. This position helps ensure that mowers, utility vehicles, tractors, implements, and small-engine machinery operate reliably and safely. The role also assists with tire work, preventative maintenance, shop organization, and field repairs to support daily course conditioning.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Maintenance and Repair
- Assist the Lead Mechanic with repairs and preventative maintenance on all turf equipment including greens mowers, tees and fairway units, rough mowers, blowers, utility carts, tractors, and small engines.
- Perform basic diagnostics on mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
- Support grinding maintenance by removing, installing, and adjusting reels and bedknives as directed.
- Help with cutting unit setup, height-of-cut checks, and after-cut appearance adjustments.
- Complete tire repairs, replacements, patching, and inflation checks for all agronomy vehicles and equipment.
Preventative Maintenance Program
- Conduct oil changes, filter replacements, belt and hose inspections, battery checks, lubrication, and fluid level monitoring.
- Assist with maintaining equipment PM schedules and documenting completed work.
- Inspect and clean equipment after use and ensure units are ready for daily assignments.
- Report equipment issues early to reduce downtime and prevent larger failures.
Shop and Field Support
- Help organize tools, parts, and inventory to maintain an efficient and orderly maintenance facility.
- Maintain clean work areas, equipment wash pads, and shop safety standards.
- Assist with field service repairs, including on-course breakdowns, flat tires, and equipment adjustments required to keep the operation running.
- Support the team during major agronomic events including overseeding, topdressing, aerification, and cultural practices.
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all safety protocols for chemicals, fuels, lifting, power tools, and shop equipment.
- Assist in maintaining records of equipment inspections and safety procedures.
- Ensure all equipment is operated and repaired in a safe manner consistent with manufacturer specifications and company policies.
Communication and Coordination
- Communicate equipment status updates to the Lead Mechanic and Superintendent.
- Work collaboratively with equipment operators to understand performance issues and requests
- Provide timely updates about parts needs, machine downtime, and potential delays in daily assignments.
Requirements
- Previous experience in small engine, automotive, equipment repair, or mechanical support role preferred
- Basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools, lifts, and shop equipment.
- Ability to learn reel setup, mower adjustments, and cutting-unit maintenance.
- Strong problem solving and attention to detail.
- Ability to work in outdoor conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Prior golf course maintenance experience is preferred but not required.
