Special Education Nurse
Description of position: The Special Education Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care to students with special health care needs from routine to complex. This role supports students' access to education by managing medical conditions, implementing individualized health plans, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. This position is a districtwide position based on need, currently at Cascade Elementary School
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Provide direct nursing care to students with complex medical needs (e.g., mobility, toileting, positioning, feeding tubes, tracheostomies, seizure disorders).
2.Implement and monitor Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
3. Develop and implement a student health plan in collaboration with school nurse 3. Administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and district policies.
4. Monitor student health status and respond to medical emergencies.
5. Being flexible in the ability to work an extended day to accommodate student transportation needs, if needed.
6. Accurately complete and submit Medicaid forms and related documents.
7. Collaborate with general education and special education teachers in providing student needed accommodations or modifications per IEP.
8. Other duties as assigned
Collaboration & Case Management
1. Participate in IEP (Individualized Education Program) meetings and collaborate with the IEP team in the development and implementation of the IEP.
2. Collaborate with the school nurse
3. Collaborate with teachers, therapists, administrators, and families to support student success.
4. Communicate appropriately, collaboratively, and effectively with parents, administrators, other school personnel, and health care providers.
5. Maintain accurate and confidential health records in compliance with FERPA and HIPAA.
Required endorsement(s)
1. Nurse with a valid Registered nurse (RN License) in the state of Iowa
2. Certified in BLS (or obtained in the first 6 months)
3. Mandatory Reporter
4. Knowledge of special heath care needs of children
5. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
Position is full-time; 190 days per year.
