MASH (Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis) Nurse Practitioner 

Position Summary 

The MASH Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides comprehensive, evidence-based care for patients with MASLD and MASH across the continuum of liver disease. Working collaboratively with hepatologists, transplant surgeons, endocrinologists, obesity medicine specialists, dietitians, and primary care providers, the NP manages patients with metabolic liver disease through diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, education, and long-term follow-up. 

The NP serves as a clinical leader in developing and implementing standardized care pathways, coordinating multidisciplinary care, supporting clinical research initiatives, and improving outcomes for patients at risk for advanced liver disease. 

 

Essential Responsibilities 

Clinical Care 

  • Evaluate and manage patients with suspected or confirmed MASLD/MASH in the outpatient setting.  

  • Obtain comprehensive medical histories and perform physical examinations.  

  • Interpret laboratory studies, liver imaging, FibroScan®, liver biopsy results, and non-invasive fibrosis assessments.  

  • Develop individualized treatment plans focused on:  

  • Weight reduction  

  • Diabetes management  

  • Dyslipidemia  

  • Hypertension  

  • Cardiovascular risk reduction  

  • Lifestyle modification  

  • Prescribe medications and therapies consistent with state licensure and institutional privileges.  

  • Work with administrative staff to obtain prior-authorization for GLP-1 agonist therapy any other advanced/specialty medications or therapies  

  • Monitor patients receiving FDA-approved pharmacologic therapies for MASH and other metabolic treatments.  

  • Manage medication side effects and treatment adherence.  

  • Identify patients with advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis requiring hepatology or transplant evaluation.  

  • Coordinate timely referrals for liver transplant evaluation when indicated.  

 

Care Coordination 

  • Serve as the primary clinical coordinator for patients throughout the continuum of care.  

  • Collaborate closely with:  

  • Hepatologists  

  • Transplant surgeons  

  • Endocrinologists  

  • Bariatric surgery teams  

  • Registered dietitians  

  • Behavioral health specialists  

  • Primary care providers  

  • Facilitate transitions between primary care, specialty care, and transplant services.  

  • Coordinate diagnostic testing and follow-up appointments.  

 

Patient Education 

  • Educate patients and families regarding:  

  • MASLD and MASH  

  • Disease progression  

  • Lifestyle interventions  

  • Nutrition  

  • Physical activity  

  • Weight management  

  • Medication adherence  

  • Alcohol avoidance  

  • Cardiovascular risk reduction  

  • Develop educational materials and support shared decision-making.  

 

Population Health & Program Development 

  • Develop and manage patient registries for MASLD/MASH populations.  

  • Assist in creating standardized clinical pathways and evidence-based protocols.  

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives focused on:  

  • Early diagnosis  

  • Fibrosis risk stratification  

  • Appropriate referrals  

  • Patient engagement  

  • Clinical outcomes  

  • Track program metrics and performance indicators.  

 

 

 

Qualifications 

Required 

  • Master's or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.  

  • Current Nurse Practitioner licensure.  

  • DEA registration.   

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.  

 

Preferred 

  • Minimum of 3–5 years of advanced practice experience in:  

  • Hepatology  

  • Gastroenterology  

  • Transplant  

  • Endocrinology  

  • Obesity Medicine  

  • Experience managing patients with chronic liver disease.  

  • Experience interpreting FibroScan®, liver imaging, and fibrosis assessments.  

  • Experience in clinical research and quality improvement.  

  •

  • Excellent clinical assessment and diagnostic skills.  

  • Strong patient counseling and motivational interviewing skills.  

  • Ability to manage complex multidisciplinary care.  

  • Strong organizational and care coordination abilities.  

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  

  • Proficiency in electronic medical records and population health management tools.
