The department of Athletics at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Student-Athlete Development Coordinator.

About The Opportunity

This position will organize and implement the Student-Athlete Development programming for student-athletes (500). Programming will include not only group but individual and team specific as well.

What You'll Do

  • Coordinate and facilitate programming for incoming and continuing student-athletes to include:
    • NCAA Recommended Programs and Curriculum
    • Career Services
    • Personal Health and Well Being
    • Financial Management
    • Leadership
    • Domestic Violence Prevention
    • Sexual Responsibility Initiatives
    • Personal Development
    • Brand Development
    • Collaborate with Director of Learning Support Services on Summer/Winter Bridge planning
  • Coordinate and Facilitate the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) to include:
    • SAAC Structure, Bylaws, and Meetings
    • Serve as Primary Administrator for SAAC Communication
    • Maintain and Update records for Big 12 Cup events
    • Attend all Big 12 Student-Athlete Development/SAAC advisory meetings and serve as a liaison to the conference office in this area
    • Event Planning
    • Blue and Golden Globes (End of Year Athletics/Academic Banquet for 500 student-athletes, coaches, and administrators
    • NIL Welcome Back Event (In Conjunction with Country Roads Trust)
    • SAAC Holiday Party
    • Relaxation Week (Fall and Spring semesters)
  • Coordinate and Manage Community Outreach Programs to include:
    • Coordinate Community Service Opportunities
    • Support Team Specific Outreach Efforts
    • Manage and update Helper account
    • Tracking of Outreach Achievements for Teams and Student-Athletes via Helper Helper
    • Managing and Tracking #OneTeam competition
  • Meet with prospective student-athletes during official and unofficial visits when applicable.
  • Maintain communications with the athletic compliance office regarding legislation and interpretation of rules and regulations related to applicable legislation governing life skill programming and related activities
  • Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional organizations.

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Services and Wellness.
  • Report directly to the Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Services and Wellness; work closely with senior athletic administrative staff and with all others involved with carrying out the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletic program.
  • Maintain knowledge of and comply with all rules, regulations, policies, and guidelines of West Virginia University, the Big 12 Conference, and the NCAA.
  • Participate in the shared responsibility in maintaining the academic integrity essential for the University to accomplish its mission; adhere to the University’s policies and guidelines regarding academic integrity and dishonesty.
  • Exhibit a level of expertise in their professional fields; must also treat the academic requirements necessary for progress toward a degree as a matter of the highest priority for the student-athletes in their charge and must actively encourage them to succeed academically and graduate.
  • Represent the University on the highest professional level with dignity, integrity, and strength of character and will exhibit ethical behavior; must respect the rights and dignity of individuals with sensitivity to problems that may arise from racial, ethnic, and sexual orientation differences.
  • Demonstrate a cooperative attitude towards all sports within the intercollegiate athletic program.
  • Possess the ability to adapt to any situation, make decisions and work independently; position must have the ability to build and maintain relationships with student-athletes, coaches, staff members, and constituencies; required to use creative abilities to develop new techniques and approaches in dealing with many issues controlled by this position; responsibilities of the position are ever-changing and require constant education; requires the ability to adapt to any situation and make decisions.
  • Adhere to all FERPA/HIPPA guidelines and manage sensitive and confidential information related to student-athletes, coaches, and staff utilizing discretion and appropriate decision-making logic.
  • Manage professional and personal time to handle time sensitive-issues, tight deadlines, extended hours beyond the normal workday, weekend work, and on-call availability.
  • Faithfully and diligently execute related duties of the department, as requested, or assigned by the Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Services and Wellness
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience in Student-Athlete Development (GA experience is acceptable), Career Development, and/or Community Engagement.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Maintain high standard of ethics and integrity related to intercollegiate athletics
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA and conference guidelines, policies, rules and regulations with the ability to interpret, apply, enforce and explain such policies and rules
  • Maintain knowledge of state and University policies and procedures
  • Exhibit strong creative, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of correct English, grammar, spelling, punctuation and sentence structure
  • Demonstrated ability in public speaking skills
  • Demonstrated ability to function professionally under high stress and confrontational circumstances
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks for extended period of time
  • Demonstrated ability to independently plan and organize work
  • Proactive attitude towards work and assignments
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain and develop personal contacts with outside groups, i.e. student-athletes, faculty, academic professionals, parents, University community

  • Ability to stay abreast of information impacting the affected area

  • Ability to maintain proper unit attendance and punctuality standards, work extended hours including nights and weekends (often with extensive walking and standing)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effected areas of involvement

  • Knowledge of higher education system and of counseling and advising techniques

  • Ability to accurately plan program of study and advise students on progress towards their degree
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guidelines and regulations
