The Carruth Center for Psychological and Psychiatric Services at West Virginia University is currently seeking applications for a Behavioral Health Therapist / Substance Use Disorder Specialist.

About The Opportunity

The primary role of the Substance Use Disorder Specialist is to provide substance use clinical services including but not limited to assessment, treatment planning, short-term counseling, group counseling, psychoeducation, and case management. The Substance Use Disorder Specialist will provide mental health and substance use counseling for students with co-occurring needs and may provide substance use and or other broader assessment and treatment to students mandated by the CARE team, Residence Life, the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, the Athletic Department, or the Dean of Students as well as students whom are self-referred.

What You'll Do

  • Provide clinical services including, but not limited to, assessment, treatment planning, short-term counseling, group therapy, crisis intervention services, psychoeducation, and case management.
  • Provide clinical services both in-person and through telehealth platforms.
  • Conduct comprehensive intake evaluations, triages, and participate in CCCPS's crisis intervention services, and after-hours crisis coverage (initial responses and crisis stabilization provide by ProtoCall staff.
  • Administer and document risk assessments and risk reduction interventions.
  • Complete required documentation in an electronic health record system and quality assurance activities including routine monitoring and management of student treatment compliance (i.e., missed appointments, cancellations, etc.) in accordance with agency policies and state and federal regulations.
  • Provide consultation and outreach to clients and their families, WVU faculty/staff, and the university community
  • Attend case conference, committees, task forces consistent with the mission of CCCPS, Student Life, and the AOD coalition
  • Provide clinical supervision to trainees and facilitate didactic seminars and training on a variety of clinical or professional topics including but not limited to substance use disorder assessment and treatment, recovery, addiction, etc.
  • Serve as a liaison to various campus stakeholders (AOD Coalition, Serenity Place, etc.) and CCCPS and student mental health concerns and resources
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Completed MA/MS/MSW degree from an accredited program
  • A minimum of two (2) years experience working with substance use in the college population.
  • Outpatient clinical experience working with a college age population, including University Counseling Center experience
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated commitment to cultural humility and affirmative care for all students
  • Experience providing clinical services in a multidisciplinary setting
  • Experience providing services to diverse, college-age students or other adults (e.g., student of color, LGBTQ students, international students, non-traditional students, military veterans)
  • Experience with Excel, Microsoft Access, or similar software
  • Ability to navigate and to collaborate with university and healthcare systems.
  • Geographical availability to provide timely on campus emergency responses during on call weeks (2-4 weeks per year)
  • Knowledge, skills, and expertise required to proficiently conduct, document, and evaluate multiculturally sensitive intake/triage/crisis assessment, individual, and group counseling, and consultation/outreach across range of mental health concerns
  • Ability to utilize an electronic health record system
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work with a team
  • Demonstrated experience with substance use disorder treatment with a college-aged population
  • Knowledge, skills and expertise required to proficiently provide care management and to actively identify and decrease barriers to care
  • Skills and abilities required to assess and respond to unpredictable clinical presentations and related calls from campus and parent stakeholders in the context of ethical and legal parameters
  • Practical and ethical knowledge regarding the provision of telehealth services

Requirements

  • Licensed (or license-eligible within 12 months) Counselor or Social Worker (LICSW) within the State of WV
  • Certified addiction professional (or certification-eligible within six months) is preferred
  • Certified addiction professional (or certification-eligible within three years of hire) is required
