What are the responsibilities and job description for the Network Administrator position at West Virginia State Police?
Under general supervision, the incumbent will be responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, performance, documentation and security of the network infrastructure in accordance with organizational and industry standards. Performs related work as required. This is a full-time position with state benefits. Essential Functions: Be the initial point of contact for network-related issues. Coordinate with senior network engineering or other IT personnel to facilitate problem resolution, when necessary. Proactively monitor the health and performance of network hardware, software and data circuits. Participate in maintaining and updating network documentation, including diagrams, inventory, and technical notes. Assist in the completion and documentation of large-scale projects. Work within established configuration and change management policies to ensure all changes to the network infrastructure are approved and documented. Install, configure, and maintain switches, wireless access points, network security appliances, and related infrastructure. Administer, configure, and maintain Palo Alto Networks firewalls and security appliances, including rule management, monitoring, and threat prevention. Administer, maintain, and troubleshoot VMware and Azure cloud virtual server environments. Participate in on-call rotation and after-hours maintenance as required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of local area and wide area networking, information processing and communications concepts and standards. Knowledge of the operations of LAN management software and/or operating systems software, application software and PC tools. Knowledge of industry best practices for security and reliability. Knowledge of fundamental networking concepts, i.e. OSI Model, Segmentation, etc. Ability to evaluate complex information systems and understand their structure, component parts and inter-relations. Ability to clearly report activities and identify potential problem areas to manager or senior technical team members. Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing. Ability to analyze information problems and apply technical information solutions. Ability to compile information and interpret technical information in user-friendly formats. Knowledge and/or Experience with Cisco and Palo Alto products preferred but not required. Training: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Substitution: Three years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid personal computer or server support experience may be substituted for the required training. Successful completion of twelve credit hours or the equivalent thereof of industry recognized authorized/certified LAN administration, network service/support and/or network technologies training may substitute for one year of the required training. Industry Certifications can also be used to meet the Training requirement and will be evaluated individually due to the wide array of industry certifications potential candidates may hold. Experience: Three years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in information processing field, one year of which is experience in local area network administration support and/or networking of standalone, mainframe, minicomputer, and LAN connected microcomputers and two years of which is experience in installation of hardware and software, support and/or training. Substitution: Twelve hours of computer science or data processing may substitute for one year of information processing experience excluding PC and LAN administration support. Industry Certifications can also be used to meet the Training requirement and will be evaluated individually due to the wide array of industry certifications potential candidates may hold. Special Requirements: Ability to complete a successful background check and polygraph examination. Pay Grade: 20 – (52,487 – 92,680)
