Nature of Work
The Transportation Worker 3 Bridge Maintenance Worker will report to the District 1 Heavy Maintenance Bridge Section at the District 1 Heavy Maintenance (DET) Headquarters in Kanawha County. Under limited supervision, performs full-performance level skilled work in the construction and maintenance of bridges. The selected applicant will be responsible for mentoring lower-level employees and will fill in as a work leader. Responsible for installing ties to reinforce steel bars in the concrete forms, as well as fabricating and installing structural steel. Will often be climbing high steel structures to repair damaged steel bridge components. Regularly works on deck replacements with timber or concrete. Duties include operating one or more motorized highway maintenance equipment such as skid steer, aerial bucket truck, tandem-axle truck, end loader, excavator, crane, and Under the Bridge Inspection Unit (UBI). May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs other related duties as required.
- The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.
- In the area of assignment of Bridge Maintenance, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.

Tier 1 hourly rate: $22.7113- Not eligible for Tier 4.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Installs and ties reinforcing steel bars in concrete forms.
- Climbs high steel structures to repair damaged steel bridge components.
- Fabricates and installs structural steel.
- Mixes concrete to fill repaired bridge structures.
- Installs timber deck on steel beam structures.
- Places pre-cast pre-stressed concrete beams.
- Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.
- In the area of assignment of Bridge Maintenance, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.
Skills and Knowledge
- Knowledge of safety practices used in structural steel construction.
- Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
- Knowledge of basic blueprint reading.
- Knowledge of general construction and maintenance practices.
- Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of gasoline and diesel-powered engines and their components.
- Knowledge of the operation of motor-driven equipment.
- Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repairs.
- Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
- Ability to read operation manuals, blueprints, and specifications in the area of assignment.

- Ability to perform skilled trades work in bridge construction and maintenance.
- Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain accurate records of daily maintenance activities and of gauges and meters used in heating, ventilation, and cooling systems.
- Ability to climb high steel structures.
- Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.
Minimum Requirements
REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION: No formal education required.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in bridge construction, roadway maintenance, bridge maintenance, or structural steel construction comparable to the work performed by the Division of Highways.
Bridge Maintenance Experience Substitutions: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience in the specified area of assignment.
