**Disclaimer-if the position is filled after July 1, 2026, then the job opportunity will not be in the classified service **The Transportation Worker 3 Equipment Operator in this position is assigned to the Lincoln County Headquarters, but reports to the West Hamlin Location. The selected applicant, under general supervision, performs full-performance level skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways. Operates motorized highway maintenance equipment such as skid steer, utility tractor, aerial bucket truck, front-end loader, tandem-axle truck, and snowplow. Makes major repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures. Makes minor mechanical repairs in the field, such as changing tires, blades, or filters. Responsible for maintaining equipment maintenance including but not limited to cleaning and lubricating equipment and checking fluid levels. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs related work as required, including flagging, erecting traffic control signs and barricades on construction and maintenance projects, shoveling materials, cleaning culverts, mowing, and brush cutting. Performs other related duties as required.The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.Pay Grade 12HTier 1 hourly rate: $22.7113Not eligible for Tier 4.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Operates a hydraulic crane.Utilizes heavy motorized equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level soil and aggregate.Utilizes heavy motorized equipment to grade surfaces, roll or compact soil and aggregate.Leads or trains lower-level equipment operators.Assists the Core Driller in positioning the drilling rig.Adds rods or augers to drill.Removes core samples from the core barrel.Assists in cleaning and maintenance of the drilling rig and related tools and equipment.Installs steel piling in pre-drilled holes.Cleans the drilling site of debris after drilling is completed.Sets and detonates explosive charges for earth removal.Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) is required.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION: No formal education required.REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Valid Class A or B CDL and four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience operating heavy equipment such as bulldozers, end loaders, dump trucks, drillers, etc.Experience Substitutions: Successful completion of an approved vocational school program may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience in the specified area of assignment.
